The Max Cafe will be open until 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve, this coming Saturday night, already!
On January 27th the Senior Citizens members will be treated to a catered noon meal at the center.
Max Civic Club and the City of Max wish you a Happy New Year!

Congratulations to Joe and JoAnn Huettl of Max in the birth of their son, Matthew David Huettl. Matthew was born on December 12th at St. Alexius Center in Bismarck, weighing 8# 11 oz. and 20 1/2 inches. Matthew's Grandparents are Warren and Kathy Huettl of Max and David and Kathy Brag of Finley, North Dakota. His Great-grandmothers are Lenore Huettl of Garrison; Pat Riemer of Douglas; and Donna Gunderson of Mississippi. Matthew was welcomed home by his brother Cayden Huettl. Cayden is now seven years old and is going to be the best-ever big-brother to Matthew! Congratulations to all of you!
Many from Max and formally from Max attended the funeral for Ethel Boettcher on Friday at Thomas Funeral Home in Minot. Ethel is buried in the Max City Cemetery just south of Max, beside her sister Doris and brother Ferd Boettcher. Ferd's son from Oregon was telling how he is working on the Boettcher family history, with most of the information coming from papers they came upon while cleaning out Ethel's house this summer. There are to be extra funeral bulletins in the Max Library.
Kathy Holte from the Veterans office in the Ward County Courthouse in Minot called to find information and items and pictures of other lady veterans as March has been designated to be Women's Veteran month. She would like to learn about any female relative or friend who is a veteran. This is not just from McLean County or just Ward County. It is from everywhere. In March she will have displays, other interesting information, and a mannequin to display a woman veteran's uniform, set up. There will be more information on this as March comes nearer. In the meantime, please get any information and pictures to her at the Ward County Courthouse in Minot. I will be able to deliver it all to Kathy for you.
On Sunday, Eugene and Margaret Zaderaka sat in awe while the First Baptist Choir and Orchestra held their Christmas Concert, all directed by Sharon Yancey Strube. Sharon taught music in the Max Public School so many of you remember her. Her directing both the choir and orchestra was amazing. I'm sure her arms were tired when the concert ended. This concert was also given at 9:30, besides 11 o'clock. The church was standing room only!! You will not ever want to miss a concert directed by Sharon!!!
Reminder: St. Matthew's Church in Max and RTC are still collecting donations of caps, scarves, jackets, mittens and gloves, and any other winter outer wear for children in this community. The collection area for RTC is the Max Auditor's office in the Civic Center.
School lets out today, December 22nd for the holiday break. Reminisce about your school days and how 'free' you felt when there was a vacation!! It was 'play time’!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Max Civic Club and the City of Max!

We have lost a long time Max resident in the death of 99 year old Ethel Boettcher on Monday morning. Ethel has been living at the Benedictine Living Center for several months and was doing very well until she fell this past Thursday night. One thing led to another and she passed away peacefully with a nurse at her bedside. The nurse said Ethel 'just stopped breathing'. Her funeral will be held at Thomas Funeral Home in Minot with burial in the Max City Cemetery south of town. Our sympathy to her nieces and nephews who spent some time in Max this past summer, cleaning out Ethel's house, and to other relatives and friends.
Santa Day this past Saturday was a big success with many-many children filling the Civic Center with their laughter and activity.
Tomorrow the Over 55 Club building will hopefully be filled with laughter and activity as the members enjoy a catered noon meal with surprises following, to celebrate Christmas. Membership dues may be paid at this time, too. Members, remember - tomorrow at noon - December 16th. The January potluck and meeting will be on the 27th.
St. Matthew's chimes are now playing Christmas music for all to enjoy. There is music on Main Street and all around town there are decorated houses and yards. Something new to Max this year is a lit scene on the pond where the Plunge can will sit.
Dusty Trails 4-H is sponsoring a winter clothing drive until December 19th, this coming Monday. They are looking for donations of gently used or new children's hats, scarves, mittens, coats, snow pants, and other winter gear in good condition. A donation box is available at the Max School in the Elementary wing hallway, for dropping off donations. Clothing collected will go to local children as well as the area Salvation Army.

Carol (Donald) Olson, formerly of Max, is a patient at Medcenter One in Bismarck. Carol and Donald ran the Centennial Cafe in Max, along Highway 83. What a nice surprise for Carol to hear from her Max friends. The Medcenter One address is: 300 North Seventh Street, Bismarck, ND 58501.

Santa Day, sponsored by the Max Civic Club, is December 10th. Will Santa come in his sleigh? There will have to be snow for that and right now things are looking pretty brown. If the forecast is correct, there will be snow for Santa!

We extend our sincere sympathy to Lillie Gullickson's family in the loss of their Mother. Her daughters are LaVonne Jungling of Max, Orian Polsfut of Chandler, Arizona, Darlene Kato and Dorene Smith, both of Minot. Many in Max know Lillie's daughters. Her funeral was Monday, November 21st. Lillie was 93.
Reminders: Don't forget to have DeeOn and Dwight Mack check your present Plan D for a better plan.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Paula Schreiner's family. Lou Gehrig's disease, ALS, took the life of this 54 year old Max/Garrison resident. Another Max native, Mrs. Curtis Wagner, Wilma, passed away in 1991 from ALS too. We are so sorry.
There is a housing need listed in the Max web-site by Gina who needs temporary housing from December first of this year, to April 30th, 2012. A studio/efficiency or one bedroom is all that is needed as her tax work will keep her on the road, traveling to Williston, Bismarck, Dickinson, and Minot. No pets and no children - just needs a place to call 'home' for these few months. If you do not have a computer/internet, you may call Tamra Huesers or Margaret Zaderaka and we will get this information to Gina.
The Max Cafe will not be open on Thanksgiving Day so the owners and employees can enjoy the time with their families.
Good news for the area - the Amtrak train is stopping in Minot again, for people to board or get off. The flood did extensive damage to the depot and the repairs are not completely finished but it is ready enough for passengers. It has been closed since the flood in June. The huge dike built around the depot did not keep the flood waters and ground seepage out.
Plan D - have you met with DeeOn and Dwight Mack to see if you can go to a different plan that will save you even more money than your present plan does? Phone them at 679-2623 to make an appointment to meet them at the Max Over 55 Club building - the Max Senior Center.

I want to give a big Thank you to Tamra Huesers for writing very interesting and professional Max News while I was gone. She did a wonderful job but she can't take on the weekly job. I asked! Thank you, Tamra!

Michele Schmidt of Max won the homemade quilt at the Catholic Church's Soup and Sandwich event. Fall is over when all the churches have had their food events!
The November Senior Citizen noon potluck and meeting will be held November 18th. Please bring non-perishable food items to each meeting and also to Santa Day that is an annual event in Max. This helps out the Food Pantry in Washburn that distributes to those in need in McLean County. The Seniors' Christmas meal/party in December is at the Over 55 Club building. There will be more definite plans for this event.
On Saturday Eugene and Margaret Zaderaka took their newly adopted dog, Trixie, to the Bark Park in Minot to meet up with her former young owners and their 5 and 6 year old children. It definitely is a 'Bark' park!!! There are several large fenced in areas where your pet can run freely without a leash. Trixie had to be kept in a kennel in their home in Mohall while both parents worked and they wanted Trixie to have a better home with freedom to run. She does exactly that here on the farm: run!
On Sunday afternoon Grandpa and Grandma Zaderaka helped Samuel Mikel Zaderaka celebrate his 2nd birthday at Happy Joe's in Minot. Samuel, his sister Hannah, and their parents are having to live in a 3-bedroom FEMA trailer, which is very-very small and Samuel is very, very active!!
There is a lot of activity just as you turn off Highway 83, into Max. A C-Store is being built there and fuel pumps for semi trucks and the like are being installed. Work is still going on, on the very top of the new concrete bins of the Max Farmers Elevator. The fall weather is agreeing with the workers but this week-end's forecast may be the beginning of our long winters!

The falling leaves seem to signal a multitude of autumn events. Here are some of the activities taking place in Max this week:
The Senior Citizens will hold their potluck and meeting this Friday, October 28th at 12:00 noon at the Max Over 55 Club. The monthly meetings have moved to their noon time slot for the winter. At the October meeting, Michelle Effertz will again join the group to speak on “Nutrition, Then and Now”.
The Max Civic Club Steak Fry is almost upon us! The Steak Fry will take place on Saturday, October 29th at the Max Civic Center. The meal will be served from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, followed by a dance with music by Wayne Douglas. If you have not secured your tickets yet, purchase them at local Max businesses. Only 300 tickets will be sold.
If you have pre-school or grade school-age ghouls and goblins, don’t forget that the Max Community Library will be holding its Halloween party at the Max Civic Center on Halloween afternoon from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Children are invited to attend and enjoy a variety of games and activities and a meal of hotdogs, chips, and a beverage. Max High School Honor Society members are generously volunteering their time to help with the event. If you have any questions, call Amy at the library at 679-2263.
The Max Community Library is also looking forward toward its Annual Soup & Sandwich Lunch fundraiser, which is planned for Sunday, February 12th, 2012. The library is seeking donations of premade gift baskets containing a collection of new items, to be used as prizes for the raffle that will be held in conjunction with the Soup & Sandwich. They are also eagerly accepting donations of used books to be sold at the event’s book sale. All proceeds from the raffle and the book sale will go to support the library’s programs and activities. The deadline for basket donations is December 1st. Donations of books will be accepted right up until the event.
The library’s Annual Soup & Sandwich also includes a Vendor Show, at which local individuals and businesses can display, advertise, and sell their products and services. Anyone interested in having a booth at the event or seeking more information should contact Library Director Amy Hauf at the library at 679-2263.
One more note about the library: Its hours of operation have expanded. The library is now open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm and 1:00 - 5:00 pm.
Remember that this week is the last week for the Max Corn Maze. If you have not experienced the outdoor autumn fun found at the corn maze, make sure to get there this weekend. On Saturday, October 29th, the maze will be having its “Haunted Maze” night from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, with the hour from 6:00 to 7:00 being less “scary” and geared toward younger children. For maze hours, activities, and other information, go to maxcornmaze.com.
Maxnd.com, the City of Max’s website, has been receiving a lot of interesting guestbook entries in recent weeks. One submission received last week was from Carita Landgrebe Connelly, the former wife of a pastor who served in Max in the 1960’s. She wrote:
“My former husband was Rev. Wayne W. Landgrebe, ALC (American Lutheran). I was very young back then in 1962-1964 and wonder if anyone remains that I would know. I'm remembering Jonelle Samshenko and Sammy (farmers north of town toward Minot, I believe). We lost touch over the years. Those were tough years with the Minuteman Missils being built, Vietnam War days and such ... not easy for an educated minister, and outsider, to step in. I'm reading DAKOTA by Kathleen Norris and realize we weren't alone in the problems we encountered. I'd love to hear from anyone remembering me ... Carita Thank you!”

Lila Fannik of Max shares the following news this week:
Ethel Boettcher celebrated her 99th birthday at the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison on Saturday, October 22nd. Ethel’s niece, Judy Sannea from East Grand Forks, MN brought birthday cake, ice cream, and a beautiful corsage. Many people from Max and Garrison enjoyed the day with Esther and brought her birthday wishes. Ether was a Max resident for many, many years.
Visitors on Sunday afternoon at Lila Fannik’s home were new neighbors Patrick and Stephanie Mogenhan (who now live in the home formerly owned by Linda and Dwayne Haynes), Melvin and Linda Venstad, Evelyne and Phillip (neighbors who have lived in the six-plex in Max and are going back to France this week), and Lorna Sambor. It was an enjoyable afternoon.
Connie Sambor of Minneapolis came to visit her mother, Lorna Sambor, and other relatives for a few days.
We extend our deepest sympathy to Tammy and Larry Hauf and family, in the loss of Tammy's Mother, Bernice Kittleson. Bernice is formerly from Benedict.
Medicare Open Enrollment is earlier now, but only until December 7th. Call for your appointment today with Dwight and DeeOn Mack at 679-2623.
Eugene and Margaret Zaderaka just returned home from a trip to Shelby, North Carolina to visit his youngest sister, Evelyne (Don) Scovill and to Waterloo, Iowa to visit his oldest sister, Ruth (Horace) Perman. En route they drove through the beautiful Smokey Mountains.
The great-granddaughter of the late Sam and Esther Devnich, Max natives, is going home today! Courtney Grace arrived early at only 2# and now weighs 9#. Marge (Devnich) and Paul Seifert are her grandparents and her parents are Brenda (Seifert) and Cody Gillund. They live in Minnesota. You can watch her progress through the Caring Bridge site services@caringbridge.org.

Teens joined together at the Max School on September 28th for the twenty-second anniversary of "See You at the Pole". This event is held annually in the month of September. It is a national "student led" prayer event that meets at the school flag pole early in the morning and prays for the school, teachers, fellow students and the nation. This event was led by Juria Bigelow. There was a super turnout of twenty-eight with students, teachers and parents getting up early before school to join together for prayer! Carmel rolls were enjoyed afterwards.

We want to keep you up-to-date on current developments in Congress. And we also want to hear from you! What are your ideas to address these critical issues? You are asked to pre-register by phoning 1-877-926-8300.This event will be from 5:30-7 p.m.at the Grand International Inn, 1505 N. Broadway, in Minot, on October 13th., a Thursday.
The 12 members of the newly appointed Congressional "supercommittee" are meeting on their assigned task - ways to reduce our nation's debt - and some want to put Social Security and Medicare benefits on the table for cuts. This small group could make big decisions about the future of benefits over the next two months. Cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits could have a devastating impact on tens of thousands of North Dakotans. Working with accurate information and sharing constructive solutions is the best way to influence these important decisions. If you have questions or would like additional information, email lhalvorson@aarp.org.

Attention, everyone on Medicare: This year there's a new earlier deadline if you want to change your Medicare coverage for 2012. Open enrollment now runs from October 15th to December 7th (instead of November 15 to December 31 as in previous years.) Open enrollment gives you the chance to switch to another Part D prescription drug plan. If you change plans by December 7th, your new coverage begins January 1st. If you don't change, your current coverage will likely continue through 2012 unless specific situations (such as receiving Part D Extra Help) allow you to switch plans during the year.

The September meeting was very well attended with 17 present, including a lot of men, who are always included in the potlucks and meetings. It isn't just a 'women's group' as many may think! Those who could brought an heirloom and talked about it - very interesting. At the October meeting, Michelle Effertz will again join us to speak on "Nutrition, Then and Now". This is also open to the public. Remember - October Potluck and Meeting is at 12 noon. Some special guests are invited to eat with us. Come see who!

Not much in news this week except for a few announcements. On Friday, September 23rd the Max Senior Citizens will be having their potluck and meeting at 6 p.m. After the potluck, there will be a speaker from Washburn telling us about the subject of "Who Gets Grandpa's Gun and Who Gets Grandma's Pie Plate". Each member is asked to bring a treasured heirloom or heirlooms and tell a bit about them. It promises to be an interesting meeting.
Saturday, October 29th is the Max Civic Club Annual Steak Fry and Dance. Get your tickets early. Only a certain amount are sold.
Refer to the back of your Community Calendar for freezers and score boards that are for sale at the Max Public School.
Animal lovers, please remember to log onto http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com and vote for Souris Valley HS - which is Minot's Souris Valley Humane Society located north of Schatz Truck Stop in Minot.
On the Max website, maxnd.com there are pictures of the new bins for the elevator. Pictures of the various stages of construction. Look around in the website - you will find interesting pictures of other happenings in Max, like moving the Max Cafe, and also pictures in the Photo Gallery. Spend some time 'In Max'.
On Wednesday, Margaret Zaderaka visited with Carol Olson Stolt, sister-in-law of Max Stolt. Carol and Margaret are classmates, graduating from Minot High School in downtown Minot. Carol is married to Max's brother, Harold. Yes, it is a small world!! While in Minot, Margaret viewed the two-bedroom FEMA trailer parked in the back yard of the house where Marlo Zaderaka lives. And also the three-bedroom FEMA trailer parked in the back yard of Dean Zaderaka's house. It will be a challenge for those trailers to compete with the North Dakota winters! But we will hope for the best. Both of these houses have been cleared out, down to the studs. The fate of the house where Marlo lives is debatable at this point, depending on what the city is going to do. Before rebuilding it, the house will have to be jacked up so the foundation can be repaired from the flood damage. It is right on the river. Dean plans to rebuild his house, back to the cozy home it once was.
Take a drive in Minot - so much traffic - so many people - fast food places and restaurants have waiting lines - even the fast food drive-throughs have lines of vehicles waiting to get to the window. But mainly, you will see all the destruction, loss and sadness. It is hard to comprehend even with our family's destruction and loss, because we can come back home to our favorite recliner and it will be there, not soaked and smelly from the flood.

Don't look now - but September has arrived, already! Again we blinked and summer passed us by. But we are very fortunate - we did not have to hurriedly move our belongings out of our homes nor do all the clean-up work the flood victims have had to do and are still doing. Volunteers are needed - groups - classes - individuals.
The Humane Society in Minot will have many more pets to adopt - go visit the pets - they love to be 'talked' to. I have read a request from the Humane Society that the workers would appreciate brownies, cookies, etc. to boost their energy and morale, as they take care of these pets - many who cannot return to their owners because of the flooding. Their building is located across the highway from Schatz's Truck stop.
The Max Community Library in the Civic Center on Main Street is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 10-12 and again from 1-5.
The Max Cafe is open seven days a week! Hours for Monday through Saturday are 7:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Sundays.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Peggy Osadchy and family in the death of her brother, Kirby Carlson. Kirby lived in Douglas and passed away in a Minneapolis hospital.
Open House for Lorna Sambor's 90th birthday, this Saturday, August 27th from 2-5 p.m. at the Max Senior Center. Your presence is your present.
It is exciting to have the cafe open again in Max! Their hours are 7:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday's hours are 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. They were able to open on Thursday, August 18th. Go see their new decor. A Grand Reopening event will be held at a later date.
Tomorrow, Friday August 26th the Max Senior Citizens will have their potluck and meeting at 6 p.m. There will be a speaker from the Minot University Seniors Patrol Group, talking about Medicare and Social Security. This is open to the public. This meeting starts at 7 p.m.
Sisters Lorna Sambor, Lila Fannik, and Phyllis Narum attended the outdoor service on Sunday at Spring Lake Church, Douglas. A large crowd of over 60 attended. The service was followed by a picnic dinner. Everyone had a wonderful time of fellowship.
Visiting recently with their Aunts Lorna and Lila were Carole and Paul Sherwood of Florida and Clay and Sharon Narum of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
School has started; a house is being built; elevator bins will soon be built, work is being done on the cafe, the trailer park and campgrounds are full, Joe Huettl and JoAnn Bragg are now married, so many things happening in Max and I'm sure I've missed many. And some people think Max is a dull little town - just take a drive around the city and see all the activity going on! It is very encouraging!

This is an addition to the news last week of Jessica Henne being awarded a Child Development Associate credential in recognition of outstanding work with young children. The Council for Professional Recognition (www.cdacouncil.org) in Washington DC awards credentials to early childhood educators who demonstrate the ability to constructively work with young children in group settings.
"It takes special knowledge, skills, and expertise to be an effective teacher of young children," says Valora Washington, CEO of the Council. "It's a great honor to earn a CDA and it shows a commitment to quality early childhood education. Each CDA candidate is observed working with young children and is assessed on his/her ability to develop the physical, emotional, and intellectual capabilities of young children. Child care staff and parents wanting more information on CDA should visit www.cdacouncil.org.

Rod Boettcher, Ethel's nephew, writes the following in the Max website guestbook entries. "Just recently came to Max to help move my aunt Ethel Boettcher to a care facility and eat at the Max Cafe (had the Max Special). My brother Rick's comments about the family are pertinent for me as well. My aunt has a prodigious memory for the family and got me interested in the genealogy of the family. Some of the names in family tree that may ring a bell are Meiser, House, Carvell, Kline and Kamps, to name a few. The farm just west of the core of town was owned by my ancestors and I played in fields out there when we would come to visit from Oregon. If you have any stories of these families, I would love to hear them. Something a genealogy often lacks are stories to give the tree a vibrancy and meaning. Thanks for the opportunity to share! Rod" His address is 8037 SE 162nd Avenue; Portland, Oregon 97236. His e-mail address is rodboettcher@hotmail.com He'd love to hear from you.

Delayed news that Lila Fannik hosted Sunnyslope Homemakers on July 12th in her home. These homemakers then had an outing on July 28th that took them to the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison where they gave a short program, including having John and Shirley Sizemore sing. The members visited with the many residents that are from Max and the area. Margaret Scurlock is the Adopted Grandmother of this Sunnyslope Homemakers group so they gave her a corsage! Phyllis Narum came from Douglas and Linda and Gordon Krueger came from Minot.

The Max Cafe is on its way! The move today took it to Main Street, leaving the bar section behind, but that will follow soon. Watch for their opening date!
August 5th and 6th are Max Rodeo days and there will be city-wide rummage sales during this time too. The advertised day for rummage sales will be Saturday August 6th 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You may hold your rummage sale other days too but those days will not be included in the advertising. Contact Christal Haugen by Wednesday, August 3rd at Max Farm Services 679-2487 or at home 679-2785 and leave a message if you are interested in setting up a rummage sale. The cost is $5 which will help defray advertising costs.
The trampoline is still missing - the wind took it somewhere. Contact Vernon or Barbara Wenger at 838-7339 if you know where it is. It had been set up at the Wenger farmstead west of Max.
August swimming lessons are being held at the YMCA on August 1-5 from 11-12:30. If you are riding the bus, please be at the school at 10:15 a.m. with a lunch packed for the bus ride home. Parents are welcome to ride the bus as well. Payment in the amount of $36 for each child is due on Monday, made out to the YMCA ($18 per child if you are a Max Civic Club member.) The bus will return around 1:15 so please be at the school to pick up your child/children at this time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Lynae Schroeder at 679-2505.
Jim Berg is requesting any photos or video of the Max All-School Reunion parade. Contact elizabethberg@comcast.net
Does anyone have a lot or a place for displaced flood victims? Not necessarily in Max...anywhere. Too many houses in Minot and surrounding areas cannot be a home to its family anymore, due to the damages the flood caused. We all know what North Dakota winters can be like so it is urgent to find housing for those who don't qualify for FEMA trailers.

The friends' and relatives' homes are now out of the Souris River flood water and the scenes aren't pretty. Many had structural damage caused by the water churning within the house. Others had calm water that did no structural damage but left plenty of mold, like in all the other homes. The mold shapes on the walls are like fireworks or large daisy flowers. I understand there are different colors of the mold too.
The activity of moving the Max Cafe has encountered some snags. Hang in there - their coffee will be just as good when they can reopen! You will definitely be kept up to date. These snags in the moving process have to be hard on the cafe owners, who are trying desperately to not have to be closed too long. Hang in there, Kathy and Warren. The community is behind you - we will wait! And the wait will be worth it.
It looks like tonight, Thursday, July 21st are the final games for T-Ball (Team 1) and Pee-Wee. They will be held in Garrison at 6 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Sara Ruhland, Summer Rec Coach at 529-4858.
Tomorrow, Friday July 22nd is the Max Senior Citizens' potluck and meeting at 6 p.m. Please do not bring anymore t-shirts for the beds for children. In delivering another big pile of shirts, BHG informs me that they are no longer collecting them - that there are already too many! Thank you for all your donations.
Upcoming event is the Max Rodeo on August 5th and 6th. Will there be city-wide rummage sales those days in Max?
Thank you to the Max Firemen for putting out the fire the train started just east of the little wooden bridge that goes over the railroad track east of town. If the fire had reached the bridge, it would not have had a chance and access to our homes would be made much more difficult. They are there for us! Thank you!

Are you taking in all the activity in Max! Watch the Max Cafe as it is moved into its new location on the east end of Main Street. Watch the big house being built on the west end of Main Street. And it shouldn't be too long before the elevator activity begins.
The Max Cafe is moving, yes, so it will be closed for this move and hopefully opening in their new location on July 25th. The All-School Reunion is over but there are still shirts and hoodies available from the all-school-reunion and if you are interested in purchasing one of these, contact Amanda Huettl at the school at 679-2685.
There will be a bridal shower for JoAnn Brag at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church on Sunday, July 17th at 3 p.m. Bring your favorite recipe. Everyone is welcome. JoAnn is the bride-to-be of Joe Huettl. They will be married in Max on August 13rh.
Linda Garrison of 11348 Boston Way; Fishers, IN 46038 writes they are thinking of buying a house in Max from one of their relatives. She would like to get to know more about the town. It looks like a great place to live and raise a family. If there are any job listings for the town available, that would be very helpful too. Her e-mail address is climberjane@yahoo.com
Lost, a large trampoline. It blew away one windy night. If you have seen it, please phone Vernon or Barbara Wenger at 838-7399. It had been set up at their farmstead west of Max.
Visitors with Lila Fannik during the reunion were Jim Steinhaus from California, James and Becky Harchenko of Alabama, Virginia and Harold Sides of Georgia, Mel and Al Kahlbaugh of Grand Forks, and Connie Sambor of Minneapolis.
Those attending the 65th wedding anniversary of John and Alice Fannik Dvirnak of Killdeer on the second of July were Lila and her daughters Carolyn Barden and Virginia Sides, LaVonne Fannik and her daughter LeeAnne Kingsley of Fargo and Vonette Mehlhoff of Arena. They enjoyed visiting with many friends and family.
Connie Sambor returned to her home in Plymouth, MN after enjoying time with her classmates and family during the Max All-School Reunion.
Galen and Della Kabanuck, Robert (Bobby) and daughter Mary Kabanuck, Lila Fannik and Lorna Sambor had an enjoyable time visiting and remembering the days of yesteryear. Bobby Kabanuck is presently a teacher in Korea.
Today at 10:30-11:30 is T-Ball and Pee-Wee practice. It is also Foot Care day at the Max Senior Citizen Center. Monday, July 18th the T-Ball (Team 2) and Pee-Wee game will be in Max at 6 p.m.

The Max All-School Reunion is upon us! It runs July 1, 2, and 3rd. Registration is at the school on Friday 4-7 p.m. and on Saturday noon to 4 p.m. The parade is always fun to watch! Line up is at 9 a.m. and the parade will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The banquet is Saturday 4:30-7:30. Sunday afternoon, July 3rd, there will a concert at the Civic Center, honoring Edwin Schmidt for his 80th birthday.
An announcement regarding the Class of 1965 at Max High School: "We would like the Class of 1965 to meet for a time of fellowship and snacks after the banquet on Saturday, at about 7 p.m., open house style at 705 Jacobson Avenue, home of Mary Lushenko. We would like to have a time to get reacquainted with everyone." -- Sent in by Shirley Lushenko Sizemore.
On an urgent note, there are requests from Minot's flood victims to find housing in Max. If you have anything, please contact Tamra Huesers or Margaret Zaderaka and we will get the information to those asking. Also flood related is the order to please conserve water, as the volume may be reduced due to the flooding in Minot. Max residents do NOT need to boil their water as the city gets its water from the Voltaire Treatment Plant and it has not been affected by contaminated water, like in Minot.
Many of you may have been glued to the television these last days, watching the flood coverage - and the water covering houses right up to their roofs. I'll put a couple of pictures in the news, along with one of the Garrison tailrace and one of the Garrison spillway that hasn't been used for 57 years! Pictures are of the Garrison Dam Tailrace - look at the water going wildly up on the fishing piers. And of the Garrison Spillway.

The Senior Citizens' Potluck and meeting is on June 24th at 6 p.m.
On the Max website, if you look up "View Guestbook Entries" you will find one requesting pictures and another praising our town of Max! This comes from Robert with an e-mail address of karb 916@hotmail.com: "I am looking for older photos of the city of Max ranging from the 1920s to the 1980s. Any shot taken on the streets of Max will work great. It doesn't matter who is in it and you don't need to include the name of people who may be in the pictures if you do not wish to. I'm working on a little project documenting the changes that have gone on in the city. If you have anything you could send in an e-mail, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!"
Then Cormac Canales, NY, with an e-mail address of reallyloud8999@aol.com writes: "I spent a little while in Max, ND while I was traveling through the Mid/North-west on a post-high school graduation road trip a few years ago. I just wanted to say that the people in the town were very polite, welcoming, and friendly, to the extent that I have not forgotten them all this while later. I hope to revisit your wonderful town again one day."
It is pretty wonderful to know that people are using and enjoying the web-site and to also let us know they think Max is pretty wonderful! How about you - do you ever look into all the areas on the Max web-site? www.maxnd.com

Something is missing on Main Street! The former Grandma's Kitchen/Grandpa's Laundromat - then Wrangler Cafe - has been torn down to make room for the present Max Cafe when it gets moved. Word is that Max Farm Services/Cenex will be building a truck stop where the Max Cafe now stands. And they are working on the forms for the new concrete elevator bins to be poured - so Max is active and interesting!

Reminder: This is for any groups, organizations, city departments, or individuals who have pages or information on the Max website, to take a look at them and see if any updates are needed. If you want updates, new information, new photos, etc. just call Tamra Huesers at 679-2030 or email tamraj@rtc.coop. We want to make sure everything is as up to date as it can be, especially with the All-School Reunion coming up. www.maxnd.com.
Notice: The June 8th T-ball/Pee-Wee games will be played in Underwood instead of Max. T-ball at 6:30 p.m. and Pee-Wee at 7:30 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Sara Ruhland at paulsara@rtc.coop or at 529-4858. The next games will be on June 16th in Turtle Lake with T-ball at 5:30 and Pee-Wee at 5:30 also.
Bible School time! Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Max will be having the Camp of the Cross come in on June 13th-17th for Bible School. Times are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The children need to bring their own lunches and also, it is $10 per child.
Today, June 2nd is the first day of the Summer Reading Program at the Max Community Library at 10 a.m.
The Max Senior Citizens had their May potluck and meeting with 18 attending to hear the two speakers from Minot present information on Alzheimer’s and to tell of help that is available. The next day was a very successful Older Americans' Day at the center.
Margaret Zaderaka joined her sister Elaine Fischer and daughter, Kilene Fischer Trueblood from MN to take in their sister's 80th birthday celebration, in Bismarck on Sunday. We were pleasantly surprised to see Florence's children and their children there from Wisconsin, Texas and elsewhere and a cousin from Colorado. Gene and Margaret spent some time in Bismarck and were just overwhelmed with all the sandbags and trucks everywhere. The residents being threatened by the Missouri River definitely need all our prayers and help!

Tomorrow, Friday May 27th at 6 p.m. is the Senior Citizens' Potluck and meeting. Remember to bring your Our Family labels and non-perishable foods and toiletries that will go to the McLean County Resource Center in Washburn. We are hoping these items will be brought to each meeting. There is a large amount of items already there in the Senior Center but not nearly enough to meet the Resource Center needs. You may also bring your baked goods for the bake sale and also bring your pie for the pie and coffee events going on at the Senior Center the next day, Older Americans' Day, from 10-2. Kyle's Greenhouse will be there selling plants of all kinds.
Celebrate former Max-ite's 80th birthday at 4 p.m. at the VFW Club in Minot. Sunshine Sally Kabanuck will be excited to see you. Did you know that Sunshine Sally performed with the Wagon Masters on the Dakota Hayride Show in the 1950's? Wayne Kabanuck will perform at this event and lunch will be served. Please do not bring gifts. The VFW Club is located at 1100 31st street S.E. Minot. In looking this location up on the map of Minot included in the phonebook, you go east of the Fairgrounds on Burdick Expressway until you reach 31st Street, then turn south until you reach the VFW Club. I notice this is close to the river so watch for water - where it shouldn't be.
Then you get into June with activities for the children. June 2nd will be the first day of the Summer Reading program, One World, Many Stories, at 10 a.m. Following dates are June 16th and 23rd. If you have any questions, call the Max Community Library at 679-2263.
On June 8th at 6 p.m. there will be T-Ball and also Pee-Wee at 7 p.m. in Max. T-Ball and Pee-Wee on June 16th will be at 5:30 in Turtle Lake. Max will host T-Ball and Pee-Wee at 6 p.m. on June 23rd. Washburn will host T-Ball at 6 p.m. and Pee-Wee at 7 p.m. on June 28th.
Have you sent in your All-School Reunion registration - have you reserved a camping site or room - because July 1st and 2nd are coming fast. Bring warm-dry weather with you!

The Plunge can is in the water! It submerged at 8:37 p.m. on Friday evening, April 22nd, a new record. First place winner was Clarey Tryhus from Minot; Second place, Rosalie Day of Max; Third place, Debby Rasmussen of Parshall; and Fourth place winner was Diane Moore of Huntington Beach, CA. Congratulations to all the winners and the Max Park Board thanks everyone who purchased tickets to try their luck.

The Senior Citizens' 190 page cookbook, Senior Favorites, can now be mailed out to you. The cookbook is $15 and the postage is $3.25 so if you want your cookbook mailed, please send $18.25 to Joyce Malling at P.O. Box #122, Max, ND 58759-0122. Any checks should be made out to Max Senior Citizens Center.
More signs are up stating Road Is Closed.....because of water! The Douglas road is closed so Douglas residents have to come south and then through Max to get to Highway #83. But when going east into Max, they have to travel through water on that highway! Highway #53 east of Max is now closed to through traffic -- last week it was 'Take Turns' driving through the water on the road. Some farmers are having to drive their tractors through deep water with their families, to get to dry ground where their vehicles await. When will it end? Not soon if the National Weather Service has it correct that May, June, and July will be cooler and wetter than normal. Even the 'old timers' have not seen things this bad. Roads that were raised two years ago, are now under water and impassable. West of the Dakota Boys Ranch in Minot, houses stand in water - roads not visible there either. The Souris River in Minot is staying within its banks, but not by much!
Here is an Easter Miracle that will put a smile on your face, despite the flooding issues. On Easter Sunday morning we arrived at church in west Minot to find a very beautiful and tame Bassett Hound dog at the church door. A member thought he recognized the dog so made a few phone calls - and yes, it was their dog. This dog had been missing for at least two weeks - from where you ask - from a home south of Max!! What an Easter blessing for the dog and his family!

Water - water everywhere! The highway heading west out of Max is underwater; the highway heading east, by the Catholic Cemetery, has been under water. Further east there is so much water on the road that signs tell you to 'take turns' going through it. Gravel roads are in tough shape with water going over them and water standing on them. Some gravel roads cannot be seen because of the water. We have one such road out here and it may be a couple of years before it will be dry and solid enough for machinery to travel on it. In the meantime, one goes through the fields. In town there are signs up that the road is closed - by the anhydrous plant south of the railroad tracks. The city crew is steadily pumping water out of the lake beside the Cenex C Store as it was about ready to flow around the gas pumps. Railroad tracks stick up through water - but all in all, there is hope that no one is having to contend with water in their basement. (Photo above: the road west of Max last week.)
The Plunge can still stands tall but with a bit of a lean to it!! Probably going to make a new record for the latest it has gone down. April 20th,1997 is the latest it has 'plunged'. From the looks of it, this year will be a record breaker!

Granddaughter Cindy Demuth writes about her grandfather, Charles Frederick Demuth, coming from Germany to New York in Jan. 1925 and proceeding immediately to Max to be a farm hand for a possible John Lenich, the name isn't clear on her information source. She wonders if there are any city directories or lists of farmers during that era or any other historical information for that period. She gives many thanks for any information or ideas anyone has for her to try. Cindy Demuth; 5002 NE Wistaria Drive; Portland, Oregon 97213; Telephone (503) 282-5890; e-mail cindydemuth@gmail.com
