The falling leaves seem to signal a multitude of autumn events. Here are some of the activities taking place in Max this week:
The Senior Citizens will hold their potluck and meeting this Friday, October 28th at 12:00 noon at the Max Over 55 Club. The monthly meetings have moved to their noon time slot for the winter. At the October meeting, Michelle Effertz will again join the group to speak on “Nutrition, Then and Now”.
The Max Civic Club Steak Fry is almost upon us! The Steak Fry will take place on Saturday, October 29th at the Max Civic Center. The meal will be served from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, followed by a dance with music by Wayne Douglas. If you have not secured your tickets yet, purchase them at local Max businesses. Only 300 tickets will be sold.
If you have pre-school or grade school-age ghouls and goblins, don’t forget that the Max Community Library will be holding its Halloween party at the Max Civic Center on Halloween afternoon from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Children are invited to attend and enjoy a variety of games and activities and a meal of hotdogs, chips, and a beverage. Max High School Honor Society members are generously volunteering their time to help with the event. If you have any questions, call Amy at the library at 679-2263.
The Max Community Library is also looking forward toward its Annual Soup & Sandwich Lunch fundraiser, which is planned for Sunday, February 12th, 2012. The library is seeking donations of premade gift baskets containing a collection of new items, to be used as prizes for the raffle that will be held in conjunction with the Soup & Sandwich. They are also eagerly accepting donations of used books to be sold at the event’s book sale. All proceeds from the raffle and the book sale will go to support the library’s programs and activities. The deadline for basket donations is December 1st. Donations of books will be accepted right up until the event.
The library’s Annual Soup & Sandwich also includes a Vendor Show, at which local individuals and businesses can display, advertise, and sell their products and services. Anyone interested in having a booth at the event or seeking more information should contact Library Director Amy Hauf at the library at 679-2263.
One more note about the library: Its hours of operation have expanded. The library is now open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm and 1:00 - 5:00 pm.
Remember that this week is the last week for the Max Corn Maze. If you have not experienced the outdoor autumn fun found at the corn maze, make sure to get there this weekend. On Saturday, October 29th, the maze will be having its “Haunted Maze” night from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, with the hour from 6:00 to 7:00 being less “scary” and geared toward younger children. For maze hours, activities, and other information, go to maxcornmaze.com.
Maxnd.com, the City of Max’s website, has been receiving a lot of interesting guestbook entries in recent weeks. One submission received last week was from Carita Landgrebe Connelly, the former wife of a pastor who served in Max in the 1960’s. She wrote:
“My former husband was Rev. Wayne W. Landgrebe, ALC (American Lutheran). I was very young back then in 1962-1964 and wonder if anyone remains that I would know. I'm remembering Jonelle Samshenko and Sammy (farmers north of town toward Minot, I believe). We lost touch over the years. Those were tough years with the Minuteman Missils being built, Vietnam War days and such ... not easy for an educated minister, and outsider, to step in. I'm reading DAKOTA by Kathleen Norris and realize we weren't alone in the problems we encountered. I'd love to hear from anyone remembering me ... Carita Thank you!”
Carita can be emailed at CARITAFC@COMCAST.NET.
Lila Fannik of Max shares the following news this week:
Ethel Boettcher celebrated her 99th birthday at the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison on Saturday, October 22nd. Ethel’s niece, Judy Sannea from East Grand Forks, MN brought birthday cake, ice cream, and a beautiful corsage. Many people from Max and Garrison enjoyed the day with Esther and brought her birthday wishes. Ether was a Max resident for many, many years.
Visitors on Sunday afternoon at Lila Fannik’s home were new neighbors Patrick and Stephanie Mogenhan (who now live in the home formerly owned by Linda and Dwayne Haynes), Melvin and Linda Venstad, Evelyne and Phillip (neighbors who have lived in the six-plex in Max and are going back to France this week), and Lorna Sambor. It was an enjoyable afternoon.
Connie Sambor of Minneapolis came to visit her mother, Lorna Sambor, and other relatives for a few days.
We extend our deepest sympathy to Tammy and Larry Hauf and family, in the loss of Tammy's Mother, Bernice Kittleson. Bernice is formerly from Benedict.
Medicare Open Enrollment is earlier now, but only until December 7th. Call for your appointment today with Dwight and DeeOn Mack at 679-2623.
Eugene and Margaret Zaderaka just returned home from a trip to Shelby, North Carolina to visit his youngest sister, Evelyne (Don) Scovill and to Waterloo, Iowa to visit his oldest sister, Ruth (Horace) Perman. En route they drove through the beautiful Smokey Mountains.
The great-granddaughter of the late Sam and Esther Devnich, Max natives, is going home today! Courtney Grace arrived early at only 2# and now weighs 9#. Marge (Devnich) and Paul Seifert are her grandparents and her parents are Brenda (Seifert) and Cody Gillund. They live in Minnesota. You can watch her progress through the Caring Bridge site services@caringbridge.org.
"Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else." Tom Peters
