December 20, 2012

Foot Care Clinic is today at the Max Senior Center on Main Street. Please keep your appointment.

The Community Calendar lists the Max Seniors having their December potluck and meeting on December 28th. This is a mistake as there will not be any December potluck or meeting. There will be a noon potluck and meeting of the Max Senior Citizens on January 25th.

Lorna Sambor and Phyllis Narum spent Sunday afternoon at Lila Fannik's home, celebrating Phyllis's birthday. She even brought her ice cream cake along, which we all enjoyed.

The fog is thick; driving is hazardous; the trees are beautiful; and the power lines were down!! The thick frost causes electrical lines to break or touch, leaving many patrons without power for heat, lights, and running household appliances. If you have not experienced it, consider yourself lucky and blessed! A few years ago the area was out of power for 3 days and the temperatures in the house got down to 40 degrees....wearing stocking caps and covering up with 8 blankets and bedspreads allowed you to sleep.  And sleep you did, because your mind wasn't 'busy' as there was nothing you could do all day to keep you 'busy'. So now you cringe when the lights flicker!!

I'm sure many are taking beautiful pictures of the frost on things....even on fences. Please be sure to have Tamra Huesers enter them in the Max Web-site's photo area. If you haven't looked in there yet, or for a long time, please do so. Tim Hauf has also added pictures, along with Brenda Hauf.

Have a safe and healthy Merry Christmas!

The Community Calendar lists the Max Senior Citizens as having their potluck and noon meeting on December 28th. There will not be a potluck or meeting in December. See you at the Senior Center events in January!

Mark Sambor and his friend Julie of Minnetonka, MN spent Thanksgiving weekend with his Mother Phyllis and his Grandmother Lorna Sambor, Kent and Carson.

Ethel Hauf and Lila Fannik visited Erwin Hauf and Frances Spitanik at the Garrison Nursing Home and The Meadows on Friday. Lila also visited Elaine Eslinger who was Marge Scurlock's room-mate. They enjoyed listing to the live music presented the first Friday of each month.

Headlines read: Max Grad Gets Coaching Honor..........Greg Malling, a Max High School and Minot State University graduate and former Beulah assistant coach, has been named Wisconsin Football Coaches Association/Green Bay Packers coach of the year.  Malling guided Arrowhead (Wisconsin) High School to a perfect 13-0 season and a Division 1 state championship. Congratulations, Greg!

There is a new website Guestbook entry from Jon Hanson of 425 16th Street NW, Minot, ND 58703. "I have an unusual request, and I thought that I would start here. I am looking for anyone that may have information on a centennial party that occurred in Max around the early to mid 70's. My father and uncle played in a band around this time called 'Raven', and they keep telling me stories about a show they did in Max, and I was hoping to track down some photos for gifts for them, as they have very fond of memories for them. I realize that this is probably something that whomever is reading this has no clue about, but maybe you would have a name of someone for me to call. Thanks for any help you can offer! November 29, 2012

Correction: In last week's news I said this past Monday, November 26th, was the last time the Good News Club would meet. That is wrong! They will be meeting three more Mondays at the school. December 3, 10, and 17th. There will be a Birthday Party for Jesus on December 17th.

Tomorrow, Friday at noon, November 30th is the Max Senior Citizens potluck and meeting.

I read where Santa is in Minot but did you know that he will be in Max on a Saturday, December 15th? It is Max Santa Day with a free breakfast of pancakes and sausage being served from 9:30-11:30 at the Max Civic Center. Santa will appear at 9:30 a.m.  There will be McGruff fingerprinting by the McLean County sheriff's office. There will be treat bags from Santa for each one of you! Max Santa Day sponsors are Bremer Bank & Insurance and Max Civic Club and they would like each of you to bring non-perishable food items and monetary donations for the local food pantries.

Do you have odd things happen to you? Would you like to tell me about them so I can write it up in the Max News?  I'll start this out by telling you what happened to me on an afternoon during the Hostfest. I was having coffee with friends in the Max Cafe and noticed an older couple having something to eat, just two tables away from where I was sitting. As we checked out, one friend asked me if I knew the couple who had just signed the guestbook, and had already driven away, as their last name was my maiden name!!  It was my cousin and his wife, from California, whom I haven't seen since 1954! I've seen pictures of him since then but this couple didn't look familiar to me at all and probably because 'in Max' was the last place I'd expect to see them! Two days earlier they told my sister in Wishek they had breakfast at the new Cenex on that Saturday morning, to which my sister said she had a sister living in Max. They knew my name was Margaret but couldn't remember my married last name. And they didn't know what I looked like, either. My cousin's wife said she 'just felt' there was a Margaret close by and was going to ask the waitress or cook but felt odd about doing it because she didn't know my last name, so she didn't. As it ended, my message to them on their home phone was waiting for them so once settled in back at home, they phoned me!!  Who would have ever thought!!

We extend our sympathy to the Gray family in Max. Leone Gray lived in the 6-plex and recently passed away at the age of 97. Her son, Melvin, and family live on the Merle Lee farm. The Gray family has had its share of sadness in recent months with the serious accident involving Melvin's grandson; then the death of their future son-in-law; and now the passing of his Mother. We are so sorry.

This Monday, November 26th is the last time the Good News Club will meet.

Friday, November 30th at noon is the Max Senior Citizens' potluck and meeting at the Center.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Max Civic Club and the City of Max. Winter is returning so please drive safely and watch out for those who don't!

Please excuse an oversight in last week's news. Travis Wagner's paternal grandparents are the late Curtis and Wilma Wagner who lived east of Max. Both sets of Travis's grandparents were involved in the Community of Max. There are containers in Max businesses to collect money for Travis's 5 year old daughter, Chesney. She has her schooling ahead of her yet and funds will be needed.

The Child Evangelism - Good News Club will be held at the Max School at 3:20 on Monday, November 5, Tuesday 13th, and Monday the 19th and 26th. Come and bring a friend. Ben Vinje, Chapter Director, will lead the club.

There is a message on the Max web-site from Rich Tumbler. "Cute site for an equally cute town! Very well done. I hope to be able to stop here in my travels. Dick"

Visitors at Lila Fannik's home this week have been her sisters-in-law, Alice Dvirnak and Kay Dvirnak and some nieces and nephews, Lorin and Karen Dvirnak and Sally Dvirnak, all from Killdeer.

Read your calendar, "Super Sub Sunday" is coming on Sunday, November 18th. These sub sandwiches can be delivered to you or can be picked up. Call Jordan Tomlinson at 679-2465, Dylan Finken at 529-4421, Kim Delzer at 679-2293 for more information and to place your order.

Notice: Senior Citizens will hold their potluck and meeting a week earlier because of Thanksgiving. It will be held at noon on Friday, November 16th.

There has been a terrible tragedy in Max and we all are missing one fine young man who always had a smile for you. Travis Wagner worked at the Max Farmers Elevator for approximately 12 years and you could always count on him to help you get the big bags of cat or dog food into your vehicle. He did this with his contagious smile!

Travis adored his little daughter Chesney, and you knew if you asked him if he had a picture of her, he'd have one in his billfold. Travis's brother worked as an intern at the McLean County Independent one summer and with that contagious smile and twinkling eyes, Travis would ask if you read his brother's article. Travis was so proud of him.

Esther Krebsbach and the late Lyle Krebsbach are Travis's grandparents and they once ran the grocery store in Max.  Esther lives in Garrison now, retired from their grocery store!

Death has a powerful sting but all your memories of Travis will ease the pain.

We all will miss you, Travis. Keep giving your smile to others.

If you are feeling lost, depressed, just plain old "why", there is a phone number to call and that 'real' person will help you deal with a variety of difficult life situations: 211 or 1-800-273-8255. Find links to these on the home page of  maxnd.com.

Tony from Illinois wrote on the Max website that he is looking for a one bedroom unit. He recently retired from the US Dept. of Justice and has begun a 2nd career at Scheels in Minot. Contact Tamra Huesers if you can help Tony.

Dwight and DeeOn Mack attended the Celebration of Life/Memorial Service for Chuck Sundquist on the 20th of October in Trinity Lutheran Church in Binford, N.D. Chuck taught English, Speech, and Drama in the Max School from 1986-1991.

The Movie Matinee this Sunday, November 4th will start at 3 o'clock instead of 2 o'clock as specified before.

From the number of cars lining the street at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, their Lutefisk and Meatball Dinner was also well attended.

On the Max website, in 'View Guestbook Entries', Alison Buren (Brammer) writes. "Hello, I tried to comment on a post but I couldn't get past the "prove you're not a robot" words. I saw that awhile back people were wondering where Dena (Pfaffengut) Buckles is, and I am her granddaughter. I just wanted to let someone know she passed away on April 2, 2011, at the age of 95. She was living outside of Seattle close to my Mom's house. Four of us were with her."

October 4, 2012

There was a very serious accident west of Max on Friday and many are wondering about it.  I don't have the details but understand several kids were racing and rolled their cars. Nick Brunsell was ejected and is in Trinity's I.C.U. with a broken collar bone, broken ribs, and a mass on his brain. Please remind the drivers in your household to wear their seatbelts and remember Nick in your prayers.

Fall has arrived when the churches start having their dinners! Sunday, October 14th from 1-5 Our Savior Lutheran Church in Max is having their Lutefisk and Meatball Dinner at their church.

Exactly one month from today is the Max Civic Club Steak Fry. October 27th, a Saturday. You had better get your tickets now; you know how time flies!

Thursday noon Margaret Zaderaka and her sister, Elaine Fischer of Garrison, had lunch with their cousin and his wife, John and Esther Larsen, from Livingston, MT. They toured Eastwood Park and were invited into the house that John grew up in, to view the flood damage.

Then on Saturday Zoe Zaderaka, Marlo's daughter, and Samuel Zaderaka, Dean's son spent some fun time at the farm. They enjoyed seeing the new twin calves born a week earlier. And they gave the three horses their treats of carrots and Samuel tried to get them to eat 'matoes'. They'd bite into them but drop them. Then the laughs began when the horses would raise their upper lip and show their big teeth, with kind of a 'yuck' expression!  Samuel agreed they need to brush their teeth!

Monday evening, Eugene and Margaret Zaderaka attended their Granddaughter's induction into the National Honor Society for Our Redeemer's Church. Emily is Mark and Lori Zaderaka's daughter, and is a sophomore with a 4.0 grade average.

This Friday, September 28th, is the Senior Citizens' Potluck and Meeting at 6 p.m. This is the last meeting to be held at 6 o'clock, as for the colder months the meetings will be held at 12 noon. Use the Senior Center on all the other days too....play cards, put puzzles together, play the piano, play pool, and just have a good time, 'out of the house'

It's open! The new Max Farm Services C-Store is now open. It is all lit up and looks very inviting. We've seen four vehicles filling with gas at one time, something that couldn't be done at the old C-Store. There is food inside, even hot food. The old C-Store has closed its doors. This is a new asset to Max.  We welcome you!

Max Civic Club's Annual Steak Fry is Saturday, October 27th at the Max Civic Center. Get your tickets early. There will be more information later on.

A large group of family and close friends gathered at the Badlands Restaurant on Labor Day evening to surprise and congratulate Margaret and Eugene Zaderaka on their 50th anniversary. Their wedding had been on the same day at 2:30, 50 years earlier. Thank you everyone for your surprise!

Later on, several of the friends and all of the family gathered at Dean and Heidi's home for dessert. This house was flooded almost to the roof so it is taking a long time to bring it back to normal. The dike broke, allowing the water to enter the area but if the dike hadn't broken, they would have had water in their basement only. Instead they had two inches of gravel in their basement, left from the flood waters, and this had to be shoveled out. These dikes were built after the 1969 flood and likely not maintained nor reinforced.

Don't forget about the annual Grandparents Day Breakfast to be held this Sunday from 9:30-12:30 at the Civic Center in Max. A free will offering will be taken to help defray the cost of printing the monthly Community Calendar that you receive free. September 9th, mark it on your calendar.

Civic Club meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 10th, at the Max Civic Center. Did you notice how much yours and others children saved on their swimming lessons at the YMCA this past summer, if the parents were members of the Civic Club?  It is quite a savings - the monthly meetings give you a few hours away from the house - and a time to visit with adults!

St. Matthew's L.W.M.L. met on Saturday with Donita Hauf as the hostess and Idamae Hauf had the Bible Study. Each brought along some old school pictures of themselves and then each was to guess who it was!! That sounds like fun!  Reminder:  their Grain Train will again be collecting clothing etc. to help out Missions, far and near. There will be more details on this later as the time for collecting comes nearer.

We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Lowell Nelson, 60, of Max. And we also extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Paul Osadchy, 98, of Max.

There is a new request for housing, on the Max website. Marilyn Wendlick from Fargo will be working at Menards in Minot so is looking for some simple housing...'even an apt. in a basement...just a cozy place to lay my head.' Contact Tamra Huesers if you know of a 'small and cozy' place.

The area is very dry, as you can see by the brown grass in your yard. Pastures are nearly without grass for the cattle and soon hunters will be in these dry areas and some may be smokers, making it even more susceptible for a fire to start.

If you are going to do any 'controlled' burning, notify the fire department so when they get calls from others about your fire, they will know you are controlling it and they do not need to respond.

Any suggestions for other tidbits to go into the Max News? One suggestion was that we could discuss our aches and pains!!

Congratulations to Wade and Cristy Haugeberg on the birth of their daughter, Tessa Lee. She was born on March 29 and joins her parents, her big brothers Bryce and Jake, and her big sister Rylie at home in West Fargo. Grandparents are Richard and Sheryl Haugeberg of Max. Great-Grandparents are Donald and Jeanette Haugeberg and Doris Anderson of Minot.

We extend our very sincere sympathy to Virginia Fannik Sides in the unexpected death of her son, Christopher Sides, 41. He is the son of the late Harold and Virginia Sides of Georgia. Christopher Sides is Lila Fannik's Grandson, with Carolyn and Allen Barden, Dennis and Karla Fannik, and many others, all relatives living in Max and the area. We are so sorry. Virginia's husband, Harold Sides, passed away about six months ago and Christopher was their only child. Please remember Virginia in your prayers.

We hear that Lorna Sambor has to stay at the Benedictine Living Center for a few more weeks. She was anxiously waiting to return to her home in Max, when the doctor found more problems with her surgery. Hurry and get well, Lorna.

Ethel Hauf of Max celebrated her birthday on Friday with many friends at the Max Cafe. Then after spending time with her husband, Erwin, at the Benedictine Living Center, she was invited out for supper. What a super birthday, Ethel!

Tomorrow, Friday, August 24th is the Max Senior Citizens potluck and meeting at 6 p.m.

Pictures of the students will be taken on Tuesday, August 28th at the Max Public School.

Everyone is watching the new Cenex C Store and fueling area take shape. It is a great addition to welcome those coming off Highway #83.

Something exciting is happening this next week - school is starting! Many students and mothers may not feel that way though. Our first day of harvest seemed to come around the same time that school started in Max, so we lost 3 of our workers - our sons. So I was one of the not-so-happy Mothers.

Friday, August 24th at 6 p.m. the Senior Citizens of Max will be having their potluck and meeting.

Tuesday, August 28th is Picture Day at the Max School.  Smile!

Food prices have taken a hike, in the wrong direction, I'm sure many of you would agree. Especially since 1910! A tidbit from an old newspaper says that on March 4, 1910, Kenmare Flour from Farmers Elevator in Max sold for $3 per 100# or you could buy 1000# for $2.90 per 100#.

Somebody turned the thermostat up again! And it is to be hot all week. Saving gas and time by not having to cut the grass but we'd all rather have it green instead of brown, as it is turning.

This past Saturday's City Wide Garage Sales event hosted 21 sales throughout the community and rural areas. All locations were located on a map of the town and area so you should have had an easy time finding them all.  Alot of hard work in preparing the items to sell.  But we are hoping everyone is happy with their sales and others, their purchases. Probably see you there again next year!!

Help is needed at the Max Public School in jobs and in volunteer jobs. Check it out on the back side of this month's community calendar, a light blue color.

A community of wonderful people is wishing Eddie Kempf a Happy 90th Birthday today, August 2nd. The family is having a card shower for him; P.O. Box #64, Max, North Dakota 58759-0064. I miss seeing Eddie walking with his little dog.

The last swimming session will be held on August 6-10. For those of you signed up, the bus will leave the school at 10:00 and return around 1:00 (actual lessons run from 10:45-12:15). Please be on time for dropping off and picking up. The cost is $36.50 per child (or if you are a Max Civic Club member, $18.25). Please be sure to send payment made out to the YMCA on Monday with your child or they may not be allowed to swim. If you have any questions, please call Lynae at 679-2505 or contact Amy Hauf the week during swimming lessons.

Last week Max Stolt enjoyed a nice visit with his granddaughter, Tyia Beskoon. Tyia lives in Nampa, Idaho and is the daughter of Jeff and Edie (Stolt) Beskoon. She had a great time attending the fair and visiting with her relatives. They are all looking forward to her next visit!

Do you like to collect things?  Here is your chance! The Max Senior Citizens and the Max Public School will collect the Box Tops for Education; Joyce Malling is in charge of these. Colleen Johnson is in charge of the collection of Our Family labels, including the UPC code. For each box top collected, the school receives 10 cents. The Our Family UPC codes help the school purchase playground equipment and music items for the music department in the Max school.

There are fliers up around town about 'Filling a Shoebox' so be sure to read one. These filled shoeboxes help the needy children get their school supplies.

The combines are rolling and so is the dust! Winter wheat harvest is fully underway in 80 and 90 degree temperatures. Don't overdo it!

July 26, 2012

These next two weeks are busy ones in Max. Tomorrow, Friday July 27th, the Max Senior Citizens have their 6 o'clock potluck and meeting.

Saturday July 28th is the Demolition Derby on the west edge of Max at 1 o'clock.

Then the next week-end, August 3-4, the Max Annual Roughrider Rodeo will be held in Max.  City-wide garage sales will be held on the 4th.  Please phone Crystal Haugen if you are having a sale as she needs to have your location on the Garage Sales map. The response is very good with ten sales already signed up and the sales aren't for another nine days.  In next week's McLean County Independent there will be more information on this City-Wide event.

Isn't this something - the farmers are combining their winter wheat and it is still July. All the crops are looking good.  Hopefully rain will come this week but sadly they do say possible hail too.

This is North Dakota State Fair week in Minot, so we have typical Fair weather - hot. Please take it easy on the very hot days and stay as cool as you can.

There is a very nice compliment in the "Guestbook Entries" on the Max website from a Maryland man. Greg King writes: "I have driven through Max a couple of times. It is a quaint little town that is very peaceful looking. I will try to visit again on my next trip to The Great State of North Dakota. Your website is very informative. Best Regards Greg King" Silver Spring, MD 20906 kingmetallica5@aol.com

The Annual Max Roughrider Rodeo is August 3-4. City wide rummage sales will be held on August 4th. Crystal Haugen is in charge so please contact her to sign up
.
Virginia Sides and her four grandchildren, Amber, Taylor Brooke, Collin, and Taylor Dean all of Georgia came to visit Lila Fannik's home. They came to attend Casey Fannik and Samantha Benzmiller's wedding in Minot on June 30th. The ten days they were here were full of fun and went by too fast.

Angele Becker of Swansea, MA, daughter of Sarah and Adam Becker will spend the summer with her grandparents, Carolyn and Robert Barden in Max.

This week Rod Kastner of Bemidji, MN visited Lila Fannik before he returns to do missionary work at Zimbabwe, Rusitu Bible College in Africa. He has taught there in Africa, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, for 30 years. While here he visited Lorna Sambor, Phyllis Narum, Dennis and Karla Fannik, Mary Lushenko, and John and Shirley Sizemore.

Friday the 13th must be wreaking its havoc!  Due to unexpected circumstances that are beyond our control, maxnd.com is experiencing a temporary outage.  The duration of this outage is not known, but could last up to seven days.  We don't, however, expect the outage to stretch out that long. We apologize for the interruption, and will have the site up and running again as soon as possible!  If you have any questions, call Tamra at 679-2030.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Donald Olson and family in the loss of their wife and mother, Carol Olson. A large crowd attended her funeral in Max this past week. Don and Carol ran the Max Cafe for many years so a lot of you remember them well. They moved from Max into the Bismarck area where they both had jobs different than running a cafe. Their home was purchased by Pat McIntyre. Donald's brother and his wife are Art and Sharon Olson, of Max.

Lorna Sambor, currently in the Garrison Nursing Home recovering from her hip fracture, received several out of town visitors over the July 4th Holiday week. On the 3rd she was visited by Paulette and Steve Schmaltz, Tim and Marina Schmaltz and their daughter Brooke all of Mission Viejo, CA. Visiting also were Todd and Julie Schmaltz and family of The Woodlands, TX as well as Ken Sambor of Bismarck. Paulette and Ken are children of the late Paul and Mickie Sambor. During that week she was also visited by her grandson Mark Sambor and friend Julie from Minnetonka, MN and Virginia Sides and grandchildren of Stockbridge, GA.

Our granddaughter, Zoe Zaderaka, returned safely from her over-sea's trip with the People to People group. They were gone for 20 days. Unfortunately shortly upon her arrival home, Zoe got sick so Grandma and Grandpa here haven't had a chance to spend time with her and see her many pictures and listen to her many stories. She made several new friends on the trip - thank goodness for 'texting'!

Gene and I spent July 3rd. with Dean, Heidi, Hannah, and Samuel at their cabin at Lake Metigoshie. We all enjoyed the huge display of fireworks put on by the cabin community. Mark, Lori, Cole, Emily, and Zoe were on their way to the cabin also but had vehicle trouble so weren't able to spend time with Dean's at the cabin until Saturday.  Lake Metigoshie is much-much smaller than Lake Sakakawea so Mark found pulling children and adults on water boards and tubes more complicated than in the wide open spaces of Lake Sakakawea.

And right now we all would enjoy the cool breezes coming off of any lake. Please be careful in this extreme heat.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Kathy and Warren Huettl in the death of Kathy's sister, Joyce Hatlestad. Joyce and Glen lived in Max before moving to Minnesota. We are so very sorry.

A very good school bus driver has left us too. Herb Schumaier, 85, passed away. His funeral was Monday in Minot and burial was at the Veteran's Cemetery by Mandan. Herb was our school bus driver, as he was for other kids in this area, and he always had a smile for them! We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife, Irene and their family.

There will be a Child Evangelism 5 Day Club from July 9-13, 10-11:30 at 705 Jacobson Avenue in Max. Contact Shirley at 679-2600 for more information or any questions. All children from ages 5-12 are invited for Bible and missionary stories, singing and Scripture memorization and, of course, snacks. We will meet in the back yard. Parents are welcome to attend. Informational flyers will be posted at the bank and civic center.

Joe Huettl may still be needing volunteers to help out at the Max Demolition Derby to be held on July 28th at 1 p.m.  Please give Joe a call at 701-391-5897. You may also find information the Max website.

June 28, 2012

Today is Mary Lushenko's special day, June 28th - her 95th birthday celebration at the Max Senior Center (Over 55 Club) from 2-4. No gifts please--your presence is her present.

Now I'm going to embarrass myself and tell you how shocked I was when I married a Max-ite and saw a sign on Main Street, "Mary's Beauty Shop".  I remember exclaiming and questioning, "Max has a beauty shop!"  I am so blessed in knowing Mary. Thank you, Mary, for being you!

The Magic City Car Club will have their meeting at the Max City Park tonight, Thursday, June 28th at 6 p.m. The public is invited to come view the beautiful antique and classic cars on display by this Club and by the Dakota Cruisers Car Club.

Joe Huettl may still be looking for volunteers who will be willing to help with the Max Demolition Derby that will be taking place on Saturday, July 28th at 1 p.m. Anyone interested can call him at 701-391-5897. More information on the Derby can be found on Facebook on the "2012 Max Demo Derby" page.

As our Granddaughter Zoe's time overseas winds down, it is amazing the many ways she has been able to keep in contact with us. The good old phone, and Facebook on the computer, for some. Ethel Hauf's great niece is also on this trip.  The group will be returning to Bismarck this Friday evening after being gone for 20 days.
