December 31, 2009

If you haven't heard nor seen, North Dakota had a Christmas Blizzard that kept everyone at home and for those who had arrived, they had to stay. Highway #83, I94, and I29 were all closed down. Beautiful sunny and calm weather did arrive, so the days following Christmas were busy with people plowing out. Minot reported 24 to 30 inches. The Max streets look like they did the winter of 2008-2009 - you probably remember us telling you about that, if you weren't here! They say winter is just starting!

Refer to your new January 2010 Community Calendar for events and meetings.

Happy New Year and may 2010 be full of blessings for you and yours!

The Sunnyslope Homemakers had their Christmas Party last week and had a very good time. On Sunday afternoon the Max Senior Citizens had their Christmas potluck and party and also had a very good time. There was a surprisingly good turnout and Wayne Kabanuck provided us with special music. There was group singing and fun games played, besides all the good food! Gifts were exchanged, once a very fun game was played to see which gift you would receive. Thank you to Lila Fannik and Marian Schmidt for planning such a wonderful program.

A note of interest, the Max Postmaster has inquired about setting up a 'drive by' mailbox in the alley behind the Post Office, only to find out Max cannot be granted one because they fear the alley will not be kept clear of snow in the winters. If you have any other suggestions, please tell the present postmaster.

October 22, 2009

(*This is the first week that the Max News is going out over facebook. Welcome to those who are viewing there for the first time! Weekly news is written by Margaret Zaderaka.)

Once again the area farmers have been stopped in their many attempts to finish their 2009 harvest. Rain and snow are part of the weather now, with a few drying days in between, before it rains or snows again.

Our sympathy goes out to the family of David Lindquist, 58, of Garrison. He is the son of Pauline and the late Walt Lindquist. Walt at one time was the grocery store owner in Max.

And our sympathy also goes out to the family of Marge Semchenko. Marge and Arnold Semchenko are former Max residents with Marge being a sister to Vernon Wenger of Max and Minot. Marge is the sister-in-law of Rita Semchenko and the late Richard Semchenko.

Mona Berke and two of her daughters, Denise and Mary, stopped by to visit with Lorna Sambor and Phyllis Seay on Sunday. It was nice to see them again.

There have been some changes in the Max Library on Main Street, with Amy Hauf taking over for Julie Osadchy. The rumors that the library will be unwilling to renew books and will be going to make it hard to check materials out are totally false. As of January first, the library will be enforcing overdue book fines, and you will not be able to check out more books if you have three or more overdue books already in your possession. All you have to do is stop by the library or phone and the library will renew your books or materials you have checked out. The library will not be automatically renewing materials for people. People need to take responsibility for their own books and/or materials they have checked out. The Library Board just wants to make our library the most efficient it can be, and bring it up to the standards of other libraries in the consortium. If you have any questions, please phone the Library Board President, Tamra Huesers, at 679-2030. How our library is run is a reflection on its patrons and also a reflection on the community of Max.

On this past Sunday afternoon, more than half a dozen men and women enjoyed spending the afternoon at the Max Senior Center (Over 55 Club). Some played pool, many enjoyed visiting with each other while they drank alot of coffee! Bars were also served. The Over 55 Club building will not be open this coming Sunday, October 25th, but will be open again the first Sunday in November, from 2:00 on.

This Thursday and Friday the children will not be in school because of Teachers Convention so please be careful while driving around Max.

On Friday, the 23rd, the Senior Citizens will be having their noon potluck with the meeting to follow. Then at approximately 2 p.m. cake will be served to honor Ethel Boettcher on her 97th birthday. Everyone is welcome. Come have your dessert first.......then the next evening you can have steak at Max Civic Club's Annual Steak Fry at the Civic Center. Tickets are presently for sale but only 300 are being sold. Serving will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the dance to follow. The proceeds will be going to the Max-Garrison Ambulance and Civic Club projects.

Be sure to sign up on the alumni website if you can help in some area or to indicate your attendance plans. A parade is being planned for Saturday morning-each graduating class is being encouraged to have an entry. The next planning meeting is set for Sunday, November 15, at 2 p.m. in the School Commons. We extend our sincere sympathy to our Deputy Otto Walth in the loss of his Mother, Lillian Walth. The Walths are from Wishek and her funeral was held there this past Saturday. Otto has a brother living in Bismarck. My sister and Lillian Walth worked together in the kitchen at the Wishek Hospital for many years. I've heard many wonderful things about Otto's Mother.

A son, Thomas Xavier, was born to Pamela and Stuart Goehring of New Salem on September 17th. He is the grandson of Joyce Malling of Max and Marie Goehring of Dickey. Thomas has a sister, Catherine, who is 19 months old.

Wayne and Ingrid Dvirnak of Colorado were weekend guests with Lila Fannik. Many relatives attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Minot where their neice's baby was dedicated. Mary Lushenko, John and Shirley Sizemore, Lorna Sambor and Lila Fannik were all dinner guests then with Pete and Delores Kizima of Minot

John and Alice Dvirnak of Killdeer and their daughter Joyce Lee of Illinois recently came to visit Lila Fannik. They also visited Dennis and Karla Fannik, Caroline and Robert Barden and their son Will, Delvin and Kristie Fannik and their family, and with LaVonne Fannik and Lorna Sambor before returning to their home.

Mary Lushenko served supper in her home last Sunday evening and those there brought birthday greetings to Pam Arnold.

Hannah Zaderaka, daughter of Dean and Heidi Zaderaka of Minot, invited her Grandma Margaret to go with her on her class's field trip to Stanley this past Friday. Twenty-one third graders and 21 adults boarded the school bus at Our Redeemer's Christian School for a short ride to the Amtrak station. They all rode Amtrak to Stanley. A new experience for many! In Stanley, after playing and eating lunches in the park, all toured a one-room school house that was built in 1915. Everyone then boarded the school bus for home - many young and old taking naps as we drove!

For more information, contact Daryl Lies at 337-6698.

There is a notice in Max's website that the gas grills have been removed from the Max City Park. They have been vandalized several times and are beyond repair. No new grills will be put up for the vandals to strike, which is unfortunate for those who would like to use them while enjoying the park.

Congratulations to Margie and LeRoy Giese on becoming brand new grandparents! Their daughter Greta and husband, Jerry Hoalt had a baby girl on August 17th, 2009. The Senior Citizens' meeting was well attended with 15 there. The Seniors are planning a breakfast towards the end of September, as a fund raiser. Other fund raiser ideas are needed and also ideas of what kind of things for socializing can be held at the Senior Center. Playing cards and bingo were mentioned as fun events, day or evening, in the Center. Even if you are not a Senior and you have some ideas, please let Joy Lies or Linda Haynes know. It is a beautiful center and it should be filled with fun events for all ages.

Have you looked over your photos for Tamra Huesers to put on the Max website? There are more requests to purchase certain items (on the web site's Swap Shop) so check it out. A used pressure cooker, a play house, and a used metal child's wagon are wanted.

Included with the news this week is a picture of the addition to the Schmidt Museum on Main Street. This addition allows for more room in the museum. Also pictured is the new Max Farm Services building on Main Street. The trailer court has about a dozen or so motor homes and campers in it presently. It is nice to see Max so active.

August 27, 2009

There isn't much in news this week but there is a request. Tamra Huesers, our website 'gal' is looking for local photos of summer, harvest, or back-to-school to post on the Max website. You can e-mail them to tamraj@rtc.coop. If there are any minors on the photos, she does need permission from the parents to post them. If the photos are sent in by the parents, she will take that as an assumption of consent. If grandparents or others send photos, she will have to contact the parents in order to OK posting them. Help her spice up the website.

You really should check the Max website often as there is always a surprise! Just now I came upon many pictures of the young and not-yet-old Max citizens assembling the new Centennial Park playground set for the children. What a nice addition to that park on Main Street.

Tomorrow, Friday, August 28th is the Senior Citizens potluck at 6 p.m. with the meeting to follow at approximately 7 p.m. You have seen the 'Over 55' people around town alot lately with us serving the Hayne's auction, the Tea Party, and most recently the rummage sale. You won't get bored so come hear what is next on the 'oldsters' agenda.

You will notice the elevator piling grain on the ground again this year. If the 'Big White Combine' (hail) doesn't destroy the crops, you will see many more piles go up.

Reminder: Please check your photos as you most likely have one or more that Tamra can use on Max's website.

There's something new, yet old, in Max. An old sign that appears to be wooden, was found in the Max Civic Center basement. It is on display in the City Auditor's office. It advertises many old Max businesses and also has a menu on it from a local cafe, selling hamburgers for 15 cents! More information is wanted on this sign so please go look at it and tell the City Auditor or Tamra Huesers what you know about it.

And speaking of 'looking at', those with computers, please go look at our new website for Max. The address is www.maxnd.com and you will be pleasantly surprised at how it has advanced. You can now get the Max weather right away and even a ten-day forecast. Also, if you have a house for sale or for rent, it can be listed on there for all to view. Word has been received that Archie Zahursky recently had surgery for a brain tumor. Let's remember him in our prayers. Archie and Mavis Zahursky are long time Max residents who moved into Minot just a few years ago.

Sunnyslope Homemakers met at Lila Fannik's home on June 9th. Eight members and two visitors enjoyed a sing-along while Shirley Lushenko Sizemore played the piano. Lila read a funny/interesting reading. They all enjoyed reminiscing about their 60th anniversary event held in Minot.

The Summer Solstice picnic held this past Sunday evening was very well attended. This has become an annual event for Max and many look forward to it each year. There were alot of little children there who enjoyed all the entertainment Tamra Huesers and Peggy Bingham had for them. Max is looking forward to larger Kindergarten classes! The Nite Owls band provided the music.

Congratulations to Vince and Heather (Kinn) Bostow of Max, in the birth of their daughter Madison J. Bostow. Madison has an older brother at home who is ready and willing to help take care of her. Congratulations.

The new and improved Max Website 'hatched' today. It is a beautiful site and brings Max into the modern age of technology. Check it out. Still the same address as before: www.maxnd.com

The pictures of Sunnyslope Homemaker's 60th. anniversary did not arrive at the McLean County Independent in time to be published in last week's paper, my fault. So look for them today!

Connie Sambor, Lorna Sambor and Lila Fannik enjoyed the Kite Festival at the Fort Stevenson State Park last Sunday. Connie spent a week in the Max area with her Mom Lorna and other family and friends.

Recent week-end guests at the home of their son and brother, Steve and Tami Hauf and family of Sabin, MN were Ed. and Idamae Hauf, Brian and Brenda Reister of Waconia, MN and Jim Hauf of Maplewood, MN. These mentioned all attended the confirmation service of Steve and Tami's son, Austin, on Sunday afternoon at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Sabin.

The classmates of Max High School's class of 1959 met at a luncheon in Minot. Classmates there were Sharon Strilcov, Carolyn Nett, Ruby Schlichting, and Connie Sambor. Marian Schmidt also joined the group.

A week ago, Karen Polsfut took Frances Spitanik and Lila Fannik also rode along, to Edgewood Vista in Minot where we visited Margaret Scurlock and Margaret Berntson. Other visitors were Delores Boozenny and Corlis Roedocker.

The chimes at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Max were playing patriotic songs on Memorial Day - a beautiful sound to listen to. These chimes were purchased with memorial money, in memory of Arnold Schmidt, by his wife Marian and sons Kendal and Warren. The chimes have a gong that goes off at every hour in the same number as the hour. 1 o'clock, 1 gong; 5 o'clock, 5 gongs. The chimes play at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Depending on the weather and wind, the beautiful chimes can be heard quite a distance away. What a wonderful addition to our city!

There is a bit more to report on regarding the Sunnyslope Homemakers 60th anniversary celebration held in Minot. Fourteen members along with two Bag Ladies enjoyed the time together. Hats were provided for each one to wear. Karen Polsfut of Max was their Bag Lady with another Bag Lady In Training adding to the festivities. Look for the pictures from this event.

The Good News Club met on Tuesday after school at the Max School Cafeteria. There were 14 children in attendance. Ben Venje led the club. It is encouraging to hear the Good News Club continues on, despite the Max Baptist Church being sold. The Club used to meet at this church.

Harold and Virginia Sides of Stockbridge, Georgia arrived to spend a week in Max with Virginia's Mother, Lila Fannik, and with other family and friends in the area. They left for home on May 13th.

Have you seen the posters around town with the 'hatching egg'? That refers to the reworked Max Web site that Tamra Huesers is upgrading for the community. This will be going up on June first. But right now the news blog is in operation and you may access it from this link: http://maxnorthdakota.blogspot.com/ . If anyone has any photos of local people and events, they are welcome on the website. Tamra would like to include them on pages throughout the site but if she gets alot of photos, she will turn them into a slideshow on one of the major pages. You may e-mail your photos to Tamra at tamraj@rtc.coop. For those who cannot send pictures this way, I'm sure Tamra can help you get your pictures to her somehow. For more information, phone Tamra at 679-2030.

Lila Fannik had a wonderful Mother's Day with her family of Dennis, Karla, Casey, Shawna Fannik along with a friend Jesse; Carolyn, Alan, and Will Barden; and her sister Phyllis Narum of Douglas and her daughter Virginia and Harold Sides of Georgia.

Lila Fannik, Virginia and Harold Sides, Carolyn and Alan Barden went to Killdeer to visit at the Tim and Sally Dvirnak's home where Elmer and Kay Dvirnak, John and Alice Dvirnak and Debbia Greenup also came to visit. The following week Kay Dvirnak fell and broke her hip and leg so is a patient in a Bismarck hospital.

The Max Senior Citizens met for their May potluck and meeting. Great things are happening that will be open to the public, each month of the summer. June 18th. the Seniors will be serving the Linda and Duwayne auction in Max. In July you will be invited to attend a Tea Party and Quilt Show at the Senior Center. Watch for further information.

Reminders: Starting June first, the Centennial Cafe will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday but will not be open on Sundays in June, unless otherwise posted. The highway crew is starting to completely redo Highway 83 from one mile north of Max to the Garrison corner, so you may be seeing Max's population increase and business places kept busier.

The 2009 Summer Reading program at the Max Public Library will be starting in June. Vanessa Kramer will be in charge of this. And on June 7th. at 2 p.m. there will be another alumni meeting at the school to plan the 2011 All School Reunion. Again, visit the new Max blog site and watch for the hatching of the new Max website on June first.

Today, Thursday, May 21st is the last day of school in Max. Please watch for children on the streets. They may be too busy playing to notice a vehicle wants to pass so be patient - maybe toot your horn - but mainly, be careful. We don't want any accidents taking place in Max.

Kindergarten graduation will be at 10 a.m. today, Thursday. This is an exciting and tearful time for parents and children. The little ones grow up so fast!

Tomorrow, May 22nd, the Max Senior Citizens will be having their May - fourth Friday - 6:00 p.m. potluck and meeting. There are several very important topics to be discussed so come and 'discuss'! Remember, potlucks and meetings will be held at 6 p.m.on the fourth Friday of each month throughout the summer.

On Saturday, May 23rd at 2:00 the Max High School seniors will graduate! What a wonderful time - making memories. Max High School used to have their graduation ceremonies on Sunday but many people wanted to attend Max's and also other graduations - so now Max has theirs on Saturday, so you can attend any other graduation on Sunday.

Several LWML members from Christ Lutheran Parish of Garrison and Max attended the Mothers and Others tea and fellowship that was held at St. John's Lutheran Church at Kongsberg on May 8th. A salad luncheon was served and all enjoyed the food and fellowship.

The Sunnyslope Homemakers celebrated 60 years since it was organized. They reminisced about the lessons that have been given, the outings they have gone on and talked about why they like to keep coming to their homemaker meetings. There will be more about this celebration, and pictures, in next week's Max News.

Reminders: Did you contact Lynae Schroeder at 679-2505 to register your child for swimming lessons? Did you make a donation to the Max High School towards the new bleachers?

Looking ahead into June, the Centennial Cafe will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday but will not be open on Sundays in June. unless otherwise posted. The 2009 Summer Reading program with Vanessa Kramer will start in June, in the Max Public Library. On June 7th. at 2 p.m. there will be an alumni meeting at the school to plan the 2011 All School Reunion.
