October 22, 2009

(*This is the first week that the Max News is going out over facebook. Welcome to those who are viewing there for the first time! Weekly news is written by Margaret Zaderaka.)

Once again the area farmers have been stopped in their many attempts to finish their 2009 harvest. Rain and snow are part of the weather now, with a few drying days in between, before it rains or snows again.

Our sympathy goes out to the family of David Lindquist, 58, of Garrison. He is the son of Pauline and the late Walt Lindquist. Walt at one time was the grocery store owner in Max.

And our sympathy also goes out to the family of Marge Semchenko. Marge and Arnold Semchenko are former Max residents with Marge being a sister to Vernon Wenger of Max and Minot. Marge is the sister-in-law of Rita Semchenko and the late Richard Semchenko.

Mona Berke and two of her daughters, Denise and Mary, stopped by to visit with Lorna Sambor and Phyllis Seay on Sunday. It was nice to see them again.

There have been some changes in the Max Library on Main Street, with Amy Hauf taking over for Julie Osadchy. The rumors that the library will be unwilling to renew books and will be going to make it hard to check materials out are totally false. As of January first, the library will be enforcing overdue book fines, and you will not be able to check out more books if you have three or more overdue books already in your possession. All you have to do is stop by the library or phone and the library will renew your books or materials you have checked out. The library will not be automatically renewing materials for people. People need to take responsibility for their own books and/or materials they have checked out. The Library Board just wants to make our library the most efficient it can be, and bring it up to the standards of other libraries in the consortium. If you have any questions, please phone the Library Board President, Tamra Huesers, at 679-2030. How our library is run is a reflection on its patrons and also a reflection on the community of Max.

On this past Sunday afternoon, more than half a dozen men and women enjoyed spending the afternoon at the Max Senior Center (Over 55 Club). Some played pool, many enjoyed visiting with each other while they drank alot of coffee! Bars were also served. The Over 55 Club building will not be open this coming Sunday, October 25th, but will be open again the first Sunday in November, from 2:00 on.

This Thursday and Friday the children will not be in school because of Teachers Convention so please be careful while driving around Max.

On Friday, the 23rd, the Senior Citizens will be having their noon potluck with the meeting to follow. Then at approximately 2 p.m. cake will be served to honor Ethel Boettcher on her 97th birthday. Everyone is welcome. Come have your dessert first.......then the next evening you can have steak at Max Civic Club's Annual Steak Fry at the Civic Center. Tickets are presently for sale but only 300 are being sold. Serving will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the dance to follow. The proceeds will be going to the Max-Garrison Ambulance and Civic Club projects.

Reminder: The ladies of St. Matthew's Lutheran church in Max are seeking names and addresses of local men or women serving in the military that are or will be deployed in the next three months. They will be sending them care packages. Contact Kathy Huettl at 679-2499 or Ethel Hauf at 679-2213 if you have any questions and to give names and addresses.

Reminder: The Max School Reunion will be held July 1-3, 2011 but there is alot of work to prepare for this event. The next planning meeting is set for Sunday, November 15, at 2:00 p.m. in the School Commons. Attend this meeting to provide your input and assistance in the planning for this to be a successful event.
