The Max Farmers Elevator is having its 100th Anniversary and Annual Meeting on Tuesday, March 29th with supper being served at 6 p.m. and the meeting to follow. This, too, is at the Max Civic Center.
A violent fast moving blizzard spent most of Friday with this community and many others. All of I-94 and all of #83 were closed and not reopened until the next afternoon. The news reports 800 motorists stranded, with the National Guard going out to rescue them. The town of Max had its own excitement when there were 30 some cars backed up on Highway 83 from Kenneth Jungling's, to the north. There was a rear end accident at the Max Public School turn-off that resulted in a girl having her collar bone broken. The Max Cafe had standing room only: 50-60 people stayed overnight in the Max Civic Center, sleeping on mats. A special thank you to the people who opened the doors to their homes, to take in the handicapped and other motorists. Many local people spent many hours trying to get to their homes, short distances from Max.
If you are familiar with the Max web-site on your computer, please check on the home page and you will see links to the Guestbook page, where some individuals have requested historical/family information; and links to the Housing page, where someone from out of state is looking for housing.
For those not having access to these areas of information, here is what is being requested. As far as the housing, a family of 4 is looking for a 3 bedroom, non-smoking, pet friendly home to rent long term, or lease to purchase for the right home. Will also consider a large 2 bedroom house. These are clean, current homeowners, with great credit with personal and credit references available. Rental budget is $1000/mo. or less. They are currently in Kansas City, MO but having a very hard time finding housing here. The husband can accept a job he has been offered in Minot, with hopes they can find housing close by. They will appreciate any help!! Thank you!! This request came in on March 8th of 2011. If you have information on housing, please contact Tamra Huesers at tamraj@rtc.coop or at 679-2030 or mail her at P.O. Box #152; Max, ND 58759-0152.
From the Guestbook the following information is requested: Coming in on March 14th is a request from Mary-Beth Meyer; 3374 Reliez Highland Rd; Lafayette, CA 94549. MBMeyerLCSW@sbcglobal.net. She writes:" My Grandfather, Walter Christian Meyer, was pastor at St. Matthew-Max from 1917-1920. I would appreciate any information about the church, the community, my Grandpa himself--from that era."
Coming in on March 8th from Vivian at Washburn, ND 58577 vmerkel@westriv.com is a request for "information (obits) of Agnes and Alvin Rumynson, who died in 1988, Nov.29 and 2002, Jan. 27. Requester, from Sweden wants to know if any family members are still living in the area? She sees in the McLean County GenWeb pages a John and Kate Rumynson are buried in the Max City Cememtery, and several Rumynson folks homesteaded in Twp150, R 80, in early 1900's. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks. Vivian"
An interesting note coming in on March 2 is from Dick Anderson; Eugene, OR compilot69@comcast.net "You have a very nice web site. I lived in Max back in 1946-51. My mom did the cooking for the school and my dad was the custodian. We lived in the bottom part of the school in a partitioned off large room next to the gym. By any chance would anyone remember the population of Max during those years. I keep thinking about 400, but for some reason it doesn't sound right. Would appreciate any help. Say hi to any Junglings or Schnaibles. Thanks for your time. Dick Anderson"
Another request is from Gordon Bruins P.O. Box 1060 LCD1, Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 7H1, gbruins@canopycanada.net. "Snowplowing on the Soo line. My grandfather, Harm Bruins, lived in Minot from about 1906 to the spring of 1909. My uncle told that one winter he was operating an engine plowing snow on the railway and they got badly stuck and about 40 men with shovels dug them out. A few years ago I saw a picture in the cafe in Max with two engines and a snowplow stuck in a drift with alot of men and shovels standing on the drift. The waitress told me her mother-in-law said that was a one-time event. (She kindly loaned me the picture to have it copied.) Can anyone provide more information about that event?"
Interesting information from this past week's McLean County Independent newspaper: The school enrollment in Max was 176 in 1993; 168 in 2000; and 188 in 2010.
We wish former Max resident Clara Wagner a happy 99th birthday today, March 17th. Birthday greetings may be sent to: Clara Wagner; c/o Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center; 2425 Hillview Avenue; Bismarck, ND 58501.

The 20th the Max Senior Citizens will be serving a French toast and sausage breakfast from 9-1 p.m. There will be a free-will offering to help with Seniors' projects. St. Matthews L.W.M.L. met at the church on Saturday with Pastor Nelson having the Bible Study. Sandy Hauf was the hostess. A prayer service is being planned.
Patricia Walz stopped in the Max Cafe on Sunday and visited with those having lunch there, on her way to her daughter's in Mandan.
Watch for news on the elementary music contest that was held in Washburn. Max students did very well.
The beautiful music is once again chiming out from St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Hope everyone is enjoying it.
Faye Hatlestad Herzog writes that her 80th birthday Open House was special - that her sons and their families did a wonderful job of planning the event. Many from Max attended.
On Sunday, Eugene, Margaret, Mark, Cole, Emily, Dean and Hannah Zaderaka met up with Sam and Esther Devnich's granddaughter and her new husband who are living in Middle River, MN. Brenda and Cody Gillund were 'touring' the area, visiting places Brenda hadn't been to since her Grandparents moved to TN. Cody is quite the hunter and was able to shoot two coyotes in the area. Cody is a Deputy Sheriff. Brenda's parents, Marge and Paul Seifert, live in Ooltewah, TN. They are a wonderful young couple. We all thoroughly enjoyed the time together.

The Max Senior Citizens enjoyed dining on Friday with several of the Max Business people who had been invited. There was quite a large number of people in attendance for the potluck and the meeting. One of the things brought up at the meeting was the announcement that there is a collection box at the Bremer Bank on Main Street in Max for the fire victims. Arlen Miller, his daughter, her two sons, and her fiancé are being helped by the Red Cross. The house cannot be lived in as it is. This is the former Ed and Marge Marko house on the south edge of Max.
The Senior Citizens' cookbook, Senior Favorites, is available now and may be purchased at several Max businesses.
March 20th at the Civic Center the Senior Citizens will be serving a breakfast of French toast and sausage, from 9-1. There will be a free will offering that will be used for the Senior Center projects.
March 26th is what they call Take and Bake Day where you take something you baked to a shut-in, neighbor, friend, and stay to visit for a bit.
The monthly potluck held at the Senior Center will be at noon for the month of March but starting in April, they will be held at 6 p.m. with the meeting to follow.
There is a request for seamless t-shirts that are cut into strips and then crocheted into mats for the children of Haiti to lie on so they don't have to lie on the dirt. The t-shirts can be in any condition, color, etc. You may leave these at the Senior Center and they will be taken to the nearby collection point at the McLean County Independent.
The Plunge can stands tall and straight but may soon start to lean so you need to buy your tickets so you can guess as to when exactly it will fall into the water. The Plunge can is outfitted with an electronic timer that stops immediately when it gets wet. Therefore, it doesn't matter if the can falls in the middle of the day or in the dead of night - the time will be exact. Your guesses need to be exact down to the minute, too. The deadline for purchasing tickets is midnight March 31st.
In the past 16 years, the can has fallen in March only two times, with it falling in April the other years. In 2010 the Plunge ended at 3:29 p.m. on April 8th. First place winner last year got $500; second place - $250; third place - $100; and fourth place - $50. The proceeds from the tickets go to improving the Max Parks.
Margaret Zaderaka spent Wed. afternoon with her granddaughter, Hannah Zaderaka, at Our Redeemer's Christian School, viewing hers and other classmates' information and pictures of the president they choose. The students had to do a lot of research for all this information and each had it well displayed on their large board. The students had to dress like the president they choose or his wife. Hannah wore a vintage style dress made by her Grandma Margaret, to depict Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt. Hannah is in fourth grade and is the daughter of Dean and Heidi Zaderaka of Minot.
A bit of interesting information about that afternoon event - also there was a classmate of Margaret's who has his grandson in that class!! A picture was taken of the 'older' classmates with their grandchildren/classmates! We figured there was about 60 years difference in age!!
In the evening Eugene Zaderaka joined LyNelle and Greg Hatlestad and the other Braunbergers and Zaderakas at the Royal Fork for a fun visit. Greg and LyNelle came in from Arizona where they live, to be with his Mother, Faye, on her 80th birthday.

The Max Community Library's Annual Soup and Sandwich lunch this past Sunday was very successful. Many good used books from the area were purchased, also.
Friday, Feb. 25th the Senior Citizens of Max will hold their noon potluck with the meeting to follow. Are you saving your Our Family food labels to bring to the Senior Center?
Reminders: Get your updated information for the Alumni booklet to Heather Iverson Lee at 679-2025 and leave a message. Or mail it all to her at P.O. Box #235, Benedict, N.D. 58716-0235.
Purchase your tickets for your guesses on when the can will Plunge. A lot of snow has melted these last few days with temperatures in the 20's, 30's, and even 40's.....so don't wait too long to purchase your tickets.

Valentine's Day is Monday, February 14th. Enjoy the Civic Club meeting at the Civic Center at 6 p.m. that evening.
On Wednesday, February 16th, there will be another Alumni meeting at the Max School at 7 p.m. Only a few months left until the All-School Reunion! Have you notified them about any changes that need to be made in the updated All-School Reunion booklet? And for those of you who received the registration papers in the mail, don't forget to send them in as soon as possible. Again, if you know of address changes or other information on other alumni, notify Heather Iverson Lee at 679-2025 or mail her at P.O. Box 235; Benedict, N.D. 58716-0235.
The Plunge can is set up on the ice between the C-Store and the Max Cafe and the tickets are selling. With the below zero temperatures and way-below zero wind chill temperatures the area is having, the can will take up residency out there for quite some time. But don't wait to purchase your tickets for your guesses as to when the can will take the Plunge.

Did you notice - the can is again on the ice. Tickets are on sale for you to place your guesses as to when it will Plunge into the water. The 'Plunge' has been an annual 'activity' for many years. Take a guess as to when it will Plunge and be a big winner.
There will be an Alumni meeting at the Max School on Feb. 16th at 7 p.m. I hope many of you knew the addresses of 'many' on the list that I put in last week's news. When you get the McLean County Independent newspaper, there will be only one day left before all the deadlines are up for the Plan D Prescription Plan and for getting recipes into the Seniors. If the weather does what is forecast, the newspaper will likely be delayed.
As of Monday, Dec. 27th, 386 recipes had been entered into the g and r publishing website, for the Seniors cook book. What a fantastic job everyone has done. Thanks for contributing.
Something else to be very proud of for such a small town is the Max website that was redesigned in June of 2009. It has had over 10,000 reader visits!! Fantastic job, Tamra Huesers.
The Max Library Partners will be having their board meeting on January 4th at 9 a.m.

Winter has arrived with more snow; Christmas is around the corner; then we start a new year! Where did 2010 go?
Two deadlines are coming up on Dec.31st: To renew or enroll in your Medicare Plan D Prescription Drug Plan and for getting your recipes to the Senior Citizens for their new cookbook. Contact Dwight or DeeOn Mack at 679-2623 to set up an appointment to meet them at the Max Senior Center to privately discuss your Medicare prescription plan. Recipes can be given to any Senior Citizen, mailed to Joyce Malling at P.O. Box #122, Max 58759, or entered on-line at gandrpublishing.com, using 'cossacks' as the user name and 'over 55' as the password.
On Friday of this past week, Lorna Sambor, Lila Fannik, and Phyllis Narum attended the Christmas Party at the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison with their sister, Margaret Scurlock. While there they visited with Frances Spitanik at The Meadows. The group also stayed for supper. What a wonderful day and way for Phyllis Narum to celebrate her birthday, too.
On Friday evening, Margaret and Eugene Zaderaka attended the performance of The Nutcracker at Ann Nicole Nelson Hall on the campus of Minot State University. Their granddaughter, Hannah, danced in three segments of this performance. Her father and mother are Dean and Heidi Zaderaka of Minot. Hannah is nine and has been dancing with this group since she was four. It was a very professional performance, highlighting costumes and scenery brought over from Russia, where the teacher is from. Many of his former students, now as young adults, returned to take part in this performance. This was also scheduled for Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
Postponement: The Max Library Partners will be having their board meeting on Jan. 4th at 9 a.m.

The October monthly potluck and meeting of the Max Senior Citizens was also a birthday get-together for 98 year old Ethel Boettcher of Max. The group sang to her and she enjoyed the many cards she received. Congratulations, Ethel, on being 98! Osteoporosis is of great concern to many people and even some people in and around Max have it. Your bones thin, become porous, and become more fragile so you may suffer more breaks. The Seniors learned more about this problem by watching a video on this subject during the meeting on Friday.
A note from Belinda (Sorenson) Riba. "About 4 weeks ago my friend Susan Gill and I drove my cousin Deb (Sorenson) Todd, her friend Penny Hand, Deb's son Ryan, daughter Anji, and Anji's fiancé Matt back to North Dakota
Deb hadn't been there in over 40 years. In the almost 2 weeks that we were in and around Max they got to see and do everything they came for. We had a great cousin's party at the hall in Max. They saw and took pictures of the Armed Forces Wall, went up to the school to look at and laughed at pictures of our parents and Aunties and Uncles, and we ate at the Max Cafe. We took a trip to New Town to meet up with Deb's cousin Dee, and to Minot to shop and to see our grandparents' graves in the Rosehill Cemetery.
Thank you to Ed and Dellora Schmidt for letting us into the Max Museum and to Rosalie Day for letting us take a tour of our Grandma Sorenson's house.
Also thanks to all the family and friends who put us up, and who put up with us! We had a great time!"
A reminder that the Good News Club is meeting at the school at 3:15 on these Mondays; November 1, 8, and 15th. All children are welcome to attend.
Other reminders: Recipes are needed for the Max Senior Citizens' cookbook. And tickets are for sale now for the Boys and Girls Basketball players' raffle which will help support the teams.
November 7th there will be a Dough Boy Breakfast served from 9:30-1. Fried bread dough, sausage and eggs will be served. The proceeds will be used to purchase new picnic tables for the Max city parks. This is being sponsored by the Max Park Board.

Darlene is kept busy with sewing 70-some lap robes for the long term care departments there in Rugby. This is something she has volunteered to do in other years too. Gary loves his job as a Maintainer driver for the Rugby area. They have purchased a very nice house in Rugby. Daughters Jenny and Kayla and their families visit often. Jenny lives in Streeter and Kayla lives in Bismarck.

Civic Club will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 9th at the Civic Center. This week, August 9-12th, Max School registration will be held, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. August 10th is the day for preschool registration, kindergarten registration, and for new students and returning students with schedule changes. Where did summer go?
Preschool starts August 31st in Max. Please contact the school at 679-2685 if you have a child who is 4 years old before August 1st of 2010, and if you plan to enroll them into the Max School Preschool Program.
Have you been able to help those requesting items on the Max Web site's Swap Shop? A wheelbarrow or garden cart; a pressure cooker, and juneberry and chokecherry bushes. For sale are the physical education room lockers. These will be selling for $5 each and will be sold on a 'first come' basis. You will need to dismantle these units. The lockers may be seen at the Max School now.
The City is requesting residents to watch for suspicious activity in the Park and to notify the Sheriff's Department at 701-462-8103. Because of all the previous vandalism, the restrooms will have to be locked at about 9 p.m. each night and reopened in the morning. Make Max a safe and clean community!
This past Sunday Lila Fannik and Lorna Sambor attended the Douglas Picnic at the Douglas Senior Center. They had a wonderful time. Visitors at Lila's and Lorna's homes in July were their nephew Don and Jan Meronuck of Fargo; their niece Kathy and Rick Kresbach from Bowman, and niece Carole Scurlock of Florida. Marvin and Madine Krueger and grandsons Reuben and David of Newport, Oregon also visited, as did Pat McIntyre of Max. The ladies appreciated all their wonderful visits.
