December 3, 2015

We want to express our sincere sympathy to John and Shirley (Lushenko) Sizemore of Max, ND and Orange Park, Florida. Their 41 year old son, Jonathan Ross (Jon) Sizemore was recently killed in an accident. Jon was the owner/operator of Communications Solutions Inc. in Jacksonville, FL for the past 14 years. Jon was a loving husband and dearly loved his two sons and family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, guns, camping, golf, and reading. Jon was a baptized believer and made it a point to show that Jesus was in his heart. He was a member of Hibernia Baptist Church.

John and Shirley Sizemore's mailing address is 2244 Marcia Ct, Orange Park, Florida 32073.
By now many of you know about the stolen ambulance taken from Trinity Hospital in Minot and colliding with our oldest grandchild, grandson Cole Zaderaka, son of Mark and Lori Zaderaka of Minot, on November 20th., south of Carrington, N.D.  If you want to read 'The Rest of the Story', read last week's Ryder News in the McLean County Independent!

It is with much thankfulness that we had a complete family Zaderaka Thanksgiving as our Cole was released out of the hospital after only 3 days and able to be with us. As of this writing, he is back in Fargo ready to take on his classes at N.D.S.U. in the morning. Thank you for all of your prayers and concern. As a young child, he felt we should sing Happy Birthday to Jesus before we prayed and sat down for our Christmas dinner!!  That's our Cole!

Several events are coming up fast in our Max community. Tonight, December 3, at 7 p.m. is the town's Christmas Tree Lighting. Everyone is asked to bring a plate of holiday cookies to share and Civic Club will be serving Hot Cocoa! There will be caroling and the lighting of the Christmas tree. There will be a food drive and all items will be collected through Santa Day on December 19th which will then be given to Our Savior Lutheran Church's Food Pantry.

The Max Seniors will be having their Christmas Party on Thursday, December 17th at noon.  It is potluck and bingo with Robbin Plesuk entertaining. Michelle Effertz spoke on Stress Management at the November Seniors' Meeting.

November 19, 2015

The Max Senior Citizens will have their noon potluck and meeting on this coming Friday, November 20th. This is a week earlier than their usual fourth Friday potluck and meeting because of Thanksgiving. Most Fridays at noon there is a salad bar and any potluck items you bring in, not necessarily just on their meeting day.

Sunday, November 22nd at 2:30 at the Max Senior Citizens' building is another meeting for the Max Alumni Reunion planning. Everyone is welcome.

Also on this Sunday, November 22nd Rainbow Photo will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Max to take family pictures. This is not limited to church members.

On Thursday, December 3rd at 7 p.m. the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony will be held in front of the Civic Center on Main Street in Max. Everyone is asked to bring a plate of holiday cookies to share and Civic Club will be serving Hot Cocoa! We will have caroling and the lighting of the town's Christmas tree. There will be a food drive and all items will be collected through Santa Days held on December 19th. These food items will then be given to Our Savior Lutheran Church's Food Pantry.

October 29, 2015

Even though not all 300 tickets were sold for the Max Civic Club's Annual Steak Fry held this past Saturday evening, the 24th, the event was a success with the entertainment giving the attendees even more than they expected. The Magician Bill Sorenson and Mylo Hatzenbuhler gave the audience what they had hoped for, and even more. The duo were given a standing ovation!

A request has come in through our personal e-mail, not through the Max Web-site, so I will copy it here for you to see if you have any information for this John Njaa (njaa@section20.com).

He writes: " I grew up in Cooperstown, ND and entered the Navy in 1956. I attended a Navy school in Millington, TN in 1956/1957. While at that school, I met a Ted Harchanko, who, if I remember correctly, grew up in Max. We became friends. We met a couple young ladies in Memphis, and Ted married one of them. After we left the school in Millington, we lost track of each other. Years ago, I heard that Ted had an electrical contracting business in El Cajon, CA. I think I also remember being told that Ted disappeared while traveling in Mexico. Would any of this ring a bell with anyone in Max? Is my memory correct about Ted growing up in Max? It would be interesting to know what became of my friend and the lady from Memphis. Thank you, John Njaa" If anyone knows of anything to tell John Njaa but can't respond through his e-mail address, please contact me, Margaret Zaderaka at 679-2459 or via postal mail at 2983 30th. Avenue N.W.; Max, N.D. 58759 and I will forward the information to him for you.

Busy days in Max aren't over yet!!  The Max Library is having a Library Week in November and various events will take place on various days. The excitement starts on Monday, November 9th.  Details of all the events will be listed in the Max News or elsewhere in this newspaper.

Halloween is on this coming Saturday so be ready to answer your door and be careful if you are out and about, whether with your children or driving.  Let's be a safe community!

If you have recently attempted to use the Request Information or Sign Our Guestbook forms on maxnd.com and received no response, we are sorry to say that these forms were unknowingly inoperational recently. The glitch is now fixed, and we apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused maxnd.com readers.  Please feel free to use the features again, and contact the Site Manager at tamraj@restel.com if you encounter any problems or do not receive a response to your inquiry in a timely manner. October 22, 2015

As I am writing this on Sunday evening, I look ahead to the Minot Daily News on its website and read the saddest news that Max's own Natalie Hankel, aged 35, passed away in a Minot Hospital this Sunday, October 18th. The benefit held for her just last evening in Max was a tremendous success, only to be followed by such sad news. The community extends their deepest sympathy to her family and friends. It is just so sad!

(Editor addition of notice from Our Savior's Lutheran Church Facebook:
"Friends, we will hold a reviewal for Natalie Hankel at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Max, on Thursday, October 22nd from 1pm-7pm with a prayer service and Holy Communion to follow at 7pm. All are welcome to join us. After the service, you are invited to join us in the basement for a time of fellowship.
Friday, October 23rd, the funeral service for Natalie will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with the burial at Trinity Cemetery in Douglas. There will be overflow seating at the Max Civic Center with the service shown live-stream, and the meal will also be served at the Civic Center.
The reach of Natalie's beautiful smile is truly unending...the impact of her life touched more than we will ever know. Please hold all who grieve and those who live with illness of any kind in tender prayer.")

Tomorrow, Friday, October 23rd is the Senior Citizens' potluck and meeting. The potlucks (including a catered salad bar) and meetings are now being held at 12:00 noon at the Senior Center. A sign that fall has arrived!!

This coming Saturday evening, October 24th is Max Civic Club's Annual Steak Fry and Entertainment at the Civic Center on Main Street. Only 300 tickets are being sold....get yours at the Max businesses or from a Civic Club member. The proceeds will go towards Civic Club Projects: Summer Rec.; Garrison-Max Ambulance; and McLean County Resource Center. The entertainment is first class!! The "Magic and Mirth of Bill Sorenson" and "Off the Wall Humor of Clyde Bauman AKA Mylo Hatzenbuhler."

The very next morning you can enjoy homemade soups and sandwiches at the Catholic Church's Soup and Sandwich Luncheon, in Max. You may also enjoy some pie with your coffee or Kool-Aid while there. This is being held from 10:30-1:00 p.m. They are having a bake sale and a raffle for the beautiful Christmas Quilt that is presently on display at Bremer Bank on Max's Main Street.

Another sure sign that the 'dark comes back' earlier (one of our boys used to say that as a tyke!) is earlier closing hours for the Max Cafe. Mondays through Thursdays they close at 6:30 and close at 7:30 on the week-ends. Sunday hours are 8-2 p.m.

My news is becoming shorter and shorter; is there anyone who could take over for me? One time each week you type it out and e-mail it to the editors at McLean County Independent. You will be paid for your work.  I am unable to attend the many functions going on in the area, so I cannot give you a more descriptive and interesting Max News column each week.  E-mail Stu Merry at editors@bhgnews.com or phone the McLean County Independent at 463-2201.

August 6, 2015

Happy 90th Birthday wishes go out to Berniece Iverson today, the 6th.

Happy 93rd Birthday wishes go out to Eddie Kempf this week. Eddie had the misfortune of breaking his hip and is in Intensive Care.

This Friday and Saturday will be busy in Max with the Rodeo on Friday at 6 p.m. and on Saturday at 5 p.m. Slack will be at 8 a.m. on Saturday. There is more information of events being held on Rodeo Days, on the back of your free blue Community Calendar.

Along with Rodeo excitement in Max, there will be city-wide rummage sales held Friday and Saturday at some homes. Standard sale times are 9:00am -3:00pm each day, though some individual sale times vary.  There will be an independent-party map with sale locations and times, for which participation is free and voluntary. Copies of this map will be available at the Max Senior Center/Over 55 Club on the days of the sale. The deadline for being on the printed map was Wednesday, August 5th at noon, as the maps were printed that afternoon. However, you could still be included on the online map. If you would like to be listed, call or e-mail Tamra Huesers at 679-2030 / tamraj@rtc.coop and provide your name, the address of your sale, a phone number if you wish, a very brief summary of what you have for sale, and the hours of your sale.  A printable Google map is available online at http://www.maxnd.com/assets/rummage-sale-map-2015.pdf.  The live map can be found at https://goo.gl/maps/Wa16q

This and every Saturday, weather permitting, Farmers Market will be held in front of the Max Cafe, with more space up the street if number of vendors require it. This starts at 9:30. You need to bring your own setup (table, tent, whatever); you may bring garden produce, canned stuff, baked stuff....whatever people want to bring to try to sell. There is no charge to participate.

There will be an All-School Reunion June 24-26, 2016. Meetings to prepare for this are going to be the 4th Sunday of each month at 2:30 p.m. at the Senior Citizen Center. The next meeting is August 23. The hope is to find a chairman, secretary & treasurer at this meeting.

The group that got together the first time, think it should be a more scaled down event with majority of events on Saturday. Suggestions are parade, kids games/rides, car show, catered meal (not sit down), street dance, all on Saturday. Friday night could just be registration and class gatherings. Sunday would be up to families and churches. So to keep in tune to this reunion, come to the August 23rd meeting at 2:30 p.m. and any others to be held on the 4th Sunday of each month at 2:30 at the Senior Citizen Center.

If you are not an alumnus, please come to the meeting to show your support.

Did you know...Our own Max Cafe has a special TwoFer Tuesday each week, featuring a dinner special at a reasonable price? Week of July 14th will be a Cod Dinner. Now back to the Max Annual Rodeo being held on August 7-8. The 5K Run proceeds are designated to updates/repairs for the Max City Park. Donations will also be accepted, if you are unable to do the walk/run.

Are you seeing pink flamingos on the lawns of local residents? There is a reason they are there and now is your turn to have them put on the lawn of a friend, or otherwise, in Max. I called for information but was unable to get any more in time for this publication.  So for more on the flamingo infestation, please call someone on the Max Ambulance board. Help support!

Let us remember Mary Lushenko and her family sitting by her side. Mary had a stroke and is a patient in Trinity Hospital. Mary will be 98 on June 24th.

Enjoy reading the following and take a hint from it. What may not seem of interest to others, can be - maybe your friend or relative has moved, married etc. Let others know - let them read it in the Max News!

Lila Fannik has enjoyed many people visiting at her home in May and June. Virginia Sides, her daughter from Stockbridge, Georgia and her daughter, Lila's granddaughter, Taylor Sides, who is a sophomore at Savannah College. Taylor enjoyed the snow storm as she had never seen one before.

Alice Dvirnak, Lila's sister-in-law, spent the past weekend with Lila. LaVonne Fannik drove us around to Dennis and Delvin's farms to visit. She also took us to the Baptist Cemetery and we all attended Immanuel Church in Minot.  Alice is now 97 and lives in Illinois at daughter's and husband Joyce and Lee Johnson.

This week Dave Meronuck and friend Susan visited Lila. They both live in San Francisco, CA.

Many times my family came and my sisters Lorna and Phyllis; many other friends also stopped by to visit Lila.
