The days are short and cold, just like the Max News is, short. I recently had rotator cuff surgery and am finding typing out the news with one finger on my awkward hand keeps things short. Be patient!

This Saturday, December 14th is Santa Day in Max. Refer to the community calendar or last week's news for further details, please.

Monday, December 16th is the Christmas Concert at the Max Public School.

Maxnd.com will be off line for a few hours on Saturday, December 14th.  The website's host is upgrading its hosting servers and must take the site down while that is happening.  The outage is expected to last three to four hours.

The Max Santa Day Breakfast will be held on Saturday, December 14th at the Max Civic Center with serving from 9:30-11:30. Pancakes and sausage are free. Santa will be appearing; McGruff Fingerprinting, and Treat Bags from Santa will all highlight the event. This is being sponsored by Bremer and Max Civic Club. They are also collecting non-perishable food items and monetary donations for local food pantries.

Monday, December 16th at 7 p.m. the Max School Christmas Concert will be held at the school. On that Thursday, December 19th, Adult Health Care and Food Care Clinic will be held at the Max Senior Citizen's Center. Phone 463-2641 for an appointment.

Mark your calendar for the Max Civic Club's New Year's Eve Family Event at the Max Civic Center. The fun includes a chili cook-off, live band and casino night.

Only 2 more Good News Club meetings:  Dec. 3 and Dec. 10.

After Dec. 7th you will have to pay a fee to enroll in a Plan D for your prescription medications. Contact Dwight or DeeOn Mack at 679-2623 to set up an appointment with them at the Max Senior Center. They will help you get the plan that saves you the most money. This service is free.

Santa Day in Max will be on December 14th.  Santa Day will include the following activities:

•      Santa Day Breakfast at Max Civic Center, serving 9:30 to     11:30. Free pancakes and sausage.

•      Santa will appear!

•      McGruff Fingerprinting for the kids.

•      Treat bags from Santa.

There will be a pancakes and sausage Benefit Breakfast for DeAnne Finken on Sunday, November 24th with serving from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Max Civic Center. Proceeds to help with medical expenses for DeAnne. Make checks payable to DeAnne Finken. This will be subsidized by McLean County Thrivent.

Don't forget about the Good News Club meetings at the school from 3:15-4:30 on Tuesdays. The last meeting will be held on December 10th which will be a Happy Birthday Party for Jesus.

There will be a Bridal Shower for Mandy Iverson on Saturday November 16th from 1-3 at the Max Senior Center.  Mandy is the daughter of Raymond and Candace Iverson. Everyone is invited.

There will be a Benefit Breakfast for DeAnne Finken on Sunday, November 24th with serving from 9:p.m. to 1:p.m. at the Max Civic Center.

The Max Civic Club and the City of Max wishes all of you a Happy Thanksgiving. Be careful!

The Macks of Max are very willing to help you with your Plan D for prescription medicines.  There are various plans that will save you a lot of money.  All you need to do is phone them at 679-2623 and they will set up an appointment to meet them at the Max Senior Center to go over the plans. This service is free.

The Child Evangelism Good News Club will meet in the Max School cafeteria Nov. 5-Dec. 10....meeting from 3:15-4:30, for those 6 weeks. They are held on Tuesdays. On Dec. 10th they will have their Happy Birthday Party for Jesus at the school from 2:15-4:20. Ben Benghi and Heather Decker are heading up this. Everybody is welcome.

Monday, November 11th is Veterans Day. There is no school that day but Civic Club will meet at 7 p.m.

Helping Hands Community Breakfast to be held at the Max Civic Center on Nov. 24th from 9:30-1 p.m. Proceeds are to help with medical expenses for DeAnne Finken. This is a free will offering and checks should be made out to DeAnne Finken. Subsidized by McLean County Thrivent.

Santa Day in Max will be held Dec. 14th.

Phyllis Narum and Steve and Joanie Narum from Douglas along with Lila Fannik from Max, along with many other relatives and friends attended Rick Krebsbach's funeral in the Catholic Church in Bowman, N.D. on October 2nd. Rick's burial was last Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the Garrison Catholic Cemetery.

Lorna Sambor recently returned from a 3 week visit in Minneapolis. She spent time visiting with her grandson Mark, his fiancée Julie, and her daughter Connie. She had many wonderful adventures while there. Mark and Julie took her on a steamboat ride on Lake Minnetonka, she and Mark spent a day making veranaki, and she was able to be at Mark's to celebrate his birthday. She attended The Hoppers and Guy Penrod gospel concerts, and attended the Understanding the Time Prophecy conference. While at the conference she was surprised to run into some Max folks, Sherry and Gary Ritchie. Of course the trip included visits to some thrift stores and lunches with Minneapolis friends. Connie brought Lorna and her traveling companion, Peko, (her bird) home again. They both enjoyed the trip very much. Welcome home, Lorna!

The school concert was very memorable, with the 6th grade band playing, mixed chorus, and concert band playing.  Colleen Zabka, music teacher for many years at the Max School, had the band play an emotional song, America on Parade, made up of different patriotic songs and had the veterans in the crowd stand! There were many!

The Senior Citizens potluck and meeting at noon on October 25th was very well attended with over a dozen there. The next meeting is November 22nd at noon, with the McLean County Extension Agent having a program.

We extend our deepest sympathy to family and friends of Sally Kabanuck. Sally passed away in a Minot hospital. A service in her memory will be later. We are so sorry.

Tomorrow at noon is the Max Senior Citizens' potluck and meeting. Bring a friend with you. Then in the evening there will be the School's Fall Concert with both band and chorus taking part. This starts at 7 p.m. It did not get on the Community Calendar. Those fill up October 25th!

October 26th will be filled with great food, music, etc. as from 5-8 the Max Civic Club will be having their Annual Steak Fry. You may purchase a ticket at any business or at the door. Saturday, October 26th. Come dance!

Then October 27th Immaculate Conception Church's Annual Fall Festival will be held from 10:30-1:30 p.m.  There will be a quilt raffle, bake sale and crafts for you also.

Visiting recently with Fred and Betty Abelseth (Vi Kostenko's sister) in Minot was Fred's 96 year old cousin and her son. This cousin's Dad was a passenger on the Titanic and survived. You can read more about him on Google through 'Olaus Abelseth'.

Betty Abelseth lived with Vi and Dick Kostenko and graduated from Max High School in 1947. At the time, her Mother was hospitalized at San Haven for T.B.

Marian Kostenko Schmidt of Max spent time with her Mother, Vi Kostenko, and her sister, Sharlene Kostenko Fredrich of Garrison on Saturday.

Sally Kabanuck, now living in Minot, is in Trinity Hospital with pneumonia. I'm sure she'd appreciate receiving some cards.

Last Wednesday several ladies went to Kongsberg to visit Pastor Paul and Judy Nelson. He was St. Matthew's Lutheran Church pastor for many years. Those going were Marian Schmidt, Tammy Hauf, Kathy Huettl, Ethel Hauf, Idamae Hauf, JoAnn Hauf, and Lorraine Schmidt came from their farm near Kongsberg. Lorraine is Arnold Schmidt's sister and is married to a Schmidt. Lunch was served. The Nelsons said they watch the wild turkeys wandering about, have seen deer tracks, and alot of other wildlife that they enjoy watching.

Foot Care Clinic is today, October 17th at the Senior Center from 1 -3 p.m.

Those attending the Minot Zone Fall Rally at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Minot were Idamae Hauf and Kathy Huettl, from this area.

Our Savior's Lutheran Church had a very good turnout for their lutefisk meal on the 13th.

On the 25th at noon, the Senior Citizens of Max will hold their potluck and meeting. Reminder: Seniors meet at noon now through winter.

On the 27th, the Max Catholic Church will hold their Fall Festival from 10:30-1:30.

This coming Friday, October 11th, flu shots will be given at the Max Senior Center from 1-3 p.m. You do not need to make an appointment. Don't get the flu shot if you aren't feeling well.

St. Matthew's LWML had their Bible Study on Tuesday, with Jan Kersten as hostess and Kathy Huettl leading the Bible Study. The group exchanged fall decorations.

Ethel Hauf, Marian Schmidt, and Idamae Hauf visited Clara Giese at Totten Trail. They were surprised by the extensive selection/collection of salt and pepper sets she has.

Civic Club meets on October 14th at 7 p.m.

Adult Health and Foot Care Clinic will be held at the Senior Center at 1:30 on Thursday the 17th.

Senior Citizens will have their October potluck and meeting at noon on October 25th.

And now to the traditional food and craft events in Max, during October. Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Max will hold their Lutefisk and Meatball dinner on Sunday, October 13th from 1-5 p.m. The prices vary according to age, with preschoolers free.

Max Civic Club Steak Fry is Saturday, October 26th with serving from 5-8. The Max Businesses are selling the tickets and only 300 tickets are being sold. A dance will follow, with Wayne Douglas. Proceeds go to the Max/Garrison Ambulance, Summer Rec, and other Civic Club projects.

Save room for Immaculate Conception Church's Annual Fall Festival on Sunday, October 27th with serving from 10:30-1:30. Prices vary according to age. There will be a quilt raffle, bake sale, and crafts for you.

Max Library is holding their Halloween Party October 31st for preschool children to 6th grade students. There will be games and prizes from 3:15-4:15 with a costume contest at 4:15. There will be supper from 4:25-5 p.m.

And the final 'food event' in Max for 2013 will be the New Years Eve Family Party, hosted by the Max Civic Club and the Southside Lounge. There will be a Chili Cook-off, Casino Night, and Live Band. People from Max, Douglas, and Ryder enjoyed Lauraine Snelling's presentation on her many books she writes. There was a question and answer session and she autographed books she has written, whether you purchased them that day or brought them from home. She thought Max was a nice community. She had only seen it from the highway before, as she traveled to the Hostfest in Minot year after year. There was a very good turnout for this event.

And the day before there was also a very good turnout for the Senior Citizens' Potluck and Meeting, held at 6 p.m. With winter upon us, from now on the potluck and meeting will be held at 12 o'clock noon.

Happy Birthday to Erna Hauf today, the 26th. There will be an open house for her from 2-4 at the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison.

Friday, September 27th is the Max Senior Citizens' potluck and meeting at 6 p.m. Next month, October, the potluck and meeting will be held at noon so people don't have to drive in the dark. But tomorrow, 27th, come at 6 p.m.

This Saturday, September 28th at 1 p.m. Ms. Lauraine Snelling will be signing books she has written. The books will be available for purchase. Come hear her talk, give a presentation and answer your questions. 1 p.m. at the Max Civic Center.

Joyce Carroll from Texas has been in the Max and Minot area for many weeks. Joyce is Ethel Hauf's niece. The two of them have enjoyed touring North Dakota!

October is around the corner, already. Let's start it off by being sure we stay healthy through the winter. Flu shots will be given at the Max Senior Center on October 11th from 1-3. Bring your Medicare card and other insurance cards with you. You will need to pay that day. They request that you get the flu shot only if you are feeling healthy and well. Do not get it if you are sick with something. It is nice that they come to us in Max so we don't have to go to Minot or Garrison to get the shot. We'd wonder what the road conditions are....it is that time of the year!

Sally Kabanuck and most of her family and friends remembered Ed Kabanuck's life with the burying of his ashes at the Max Baptist Cemetery on a recent Saturday. Wayne Kabanuck sang and played his guitar - and everyone sang Ed's favorite songs. Sally Kabanuck has moved into Minot and is living in a Retirement Home.

Carolyn Kostenko Nett was in the area last week and visited her Mother and sisters Sharlene and Marian.

Larry Oiland of CA left for home on Tuesday after spending some time doing some upkeep on the SpringLake Church. He visited friends in the Max and Douglas area. Before he left, he visited Lila Fannik and Lorna Sambor.

Gloria Henne surprised Lila Fannik with bringing by Terry Plesuk, who had lived with both families while attending school in Max.

For Erna Hauf's 99th birthday, there will be a card shower for her. Those wishing to send her birthday greetings may do so to the Benedictine Living Center, Room #43; 609 4th Avenue N.E.; Garrison, N.D. 58540.  Erna's birthday is September 26th and on that day there will be cake and ice cream served in her honor at an Open House from 2-4 p.m. at the Benedictine Living Center.

We extend our sincerest sympathy to the family of Vonnie McCall, 83. Vonnie passed away on Sept. 3 from complications sustained from a recent car accident near her home in Bismarck. Vonnie and Jack McCall were long-time residents of Max, living in the upper part of the Max Railroad Depot where Jack was employed. Vonnie worked in the Max Post Office, served on the Max School Board and later purchased and operated the Silver Dollar Saloon which stood on the corner where the Max Farm Service offices stand. Her business was destroyed by fire. Their children return to Max for school reunions and celebrations. We are so sorry!

There are a lot of sports being played; so many that you need to refer to your free Community Calendar for the schedules. Support the Max teams!

Vi Kostenko of Garrison, formerly of Max, is again a Great Grandmother! Her grandson, Sidney and his wife Meghan, just gave birth to Cyrus Anthony Mann. Their little girl Leah is very helpful in taking care of little Cyrus. Sidney is Jolene (Kostenko) and Tony Mann's son.

The St. Matthew's ladies met for LWML with Idamae Hauf serving the lunch and their new Pastor Woodruff having the bible study.

Lorna Sambor and Lila Fannik went to the cemetery for the burial of Ed Kabanuck's ashes.

Our 3 year old grandson, Samuel Mikel, loves spending time with his Daddy Dean on the farm, riding in the combine. Last week one day when his Mother picked him up to go home, he cried and said to her, "I can't go home; there is still work to do." Yes, most farmers do have 'work to do' so let the sun shine once again!

Thursday evening Lorna Sambor, Lila Fannik and Larry Oiland brought birthday greetings to Mabel Albertson at her home. Mabel now lives by Norwich and by some of her children and grandchildren.

On Sunday from 4-6 many came to celebrate Pastor John's and Cheryl Nilson's retirement from Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Max.

We have two messages in the Guestbook on the Max website. Betheny Auker of 14275 Barrett Mill Rd; Bainbridge, OH 45612 writes: "Hello! My husband, myself, and our two year little boy will be moving to Max at the end of this month. We are moving from Ohio and are very excited to live in Max! The next message comes from Kim DeLeon of Mandan, ND 58554, and her e-mail address is kimddeleon@yahoo.com. "Our family currently lives in Mandan. My husband's job has moved him to New Town and he needs an in-between spot to spend the night on long work days and during harsh winter conditions. We are looking for an apt. or rental in Max. Please have someone call me at 360-870-9454. With thanks, Kim." She has also left this message on the housing page of the Max web-site.

Sharlene Fredrich of Garrison brought her Mother, Vi Kostenko, also of Garrison, to Max for the Adolph Olson Family Reunion. Marian Schmidt, Vi's daughter, also joined them. Vi was the oldest attending! Grandma Clara Kostenko was a daughter of Adolf Olson. And Ray (Lorna) Olson's Dad and Clara were brother and sister. There was alot of work done in preparation for this very first reunion.

There were alot of pictures on display; and also a memorial wall honoring the Olson servicemen. Some of these men are still living. The medals and ribbons were on display and there was a very good slide presentation. It was a very enjoyable event.

This coming Saturday and Sunday, August 17-18 is the Adolph Olsen Family Reunion at the Civic Center in Max. Pattie Olson Foley wrote in with the announcement of this, stating that Ray (Lorna) Olson is her uncle.

Lila Fannik and Lorna Sambor attended the funeral of Barry Lee in Bismarck. Barry was the son-in-law of Don and Jan Meronuck.

Steve and Paulette Schmaltz of CA visited at Lorna Sambor's home last week. Paulette is Paul Sambor's daughter.

Lorna Sambor enjoyed the day in Douglas when they had their community picnic. It was so nice to visit and chat with old school mates from the Douglas school. Lorna was the second oldest there, with Mildred Roberts being the oldest at 96.

Linda Bushian Shirts from Port Townsend, WA visited Lorna Sambor last week.

This coming Monday, August 12th, is the Max Civic Club meeting at 7 p.m.

Training for school sports is getting started, school registration is over, and farmers are starting to seed their winter wheat. Makes you think the summer is almost over! Where did it go, or did it forget to come and stay awhile!

Many individuals are taking part in the Bountiful Baskets program offered in Max. As a first timer, I had no idea what to expect, except I had heard there was a lot of food and good food. And that there was! My banana box was full, with 11 different fruits and vegetables. Quite a variety. Many salads and maybe even some Borsch will come out of that box's contents. If you are interested in getting your own Bountiful Basket, as they are referred to, call Jessica Henne for the details on how to get started. You won't regret it! Hours - approximately 40 per week

  Wage - Depends on Experience

            Job Duties and Requirements:

·        Responsible for Water-Sewer Maintenance. 

·        If not currently certified, would be required to become Certified in Water Distribution and Chemical Application.

·        Responsible for maintaining city streets including snow removal in the winter.  Must be able to obtain a CDL-Class B with Air Brakes.

The Annual Max Roughriders Rodeo is right around the corner, tomorrow and Saturday. We are hoping for good weather for this event.

To add to the 'busyness' of the week, Max school registration is August 5-6. Physicals will be held those days also, at the school.

There is another need for housing from Tandi of Douglas, N.D. "We are looking for a 3-4 bedroom house to rent. We just found out we have to leave the current house we are living in because the owners decided to move back into it. We are a family with a toddler, and baby on the way. We really need to find a rental in the area of Max/Garrison so my husband can keep his job. Please help us out because we need something asap."

On Sunday Lila Fannik, Lorna Sambor and Carolyn Barden attended the Presbyterian Church in Ryder to enjoy the Marlin and Leslie Peterson family concert. They are a musical family who shared both vocal and instrumental. It was a beautiful concert. On their way home they visited at the home of Phyllis Narum in Douglas.

Even though many Seniors attended the State Fair in Minot on Friday, there was still a good number of Seniors who took in the potluck and meeting at the Senior Center that day.

Orlin and Ivadell Larson of Washburn visited Sunday afternoon with Lorna Sambor and Lila Fannik.

Tomorrow, Friday July 26th at 6 p.m. the Max Senior Citizens will be having their potluck and meeting at the Senior Center on Main Street.

Max's Annual Roughrider Rodeo will be held August 2-3.  It is always a fun time for adults and kids with the mutton busting. Let's hope for good weather.

The month of August keeps moving on with swimming lessons being held in Minot on August 5-9. Call Amy Hauf at 500-2857 for more information.

Is your world getting smaller, as the saying goes?  Margaret and Eugene Zaderaka's sure is, especially for Margaret. We were in Bismarck last week and following the appointment, the doctor and Gene were 'farming', as men do when they visit. The doctor said he was raised on a farm by Wishek, N.D. "My oldest sister, Florence Wiest, lives there!"  The doctor knows her; she taught home ec. to his sisters; and because of Florence, he now has his Grandmother's German Bible that he cherishes. That came about when Florence found it at a garage sale! She then gave it to the Mother, in assisted living there in Wishek, and then the son got it. He said Florence is such a wonderful person, 'she didn't even keep the Bible, she gave it to us!" My sister, Florence, felt very special when I told her about this.

A temporary water outage related to water tower repairs is expected to take place at approximately 2:45 pm today.  The outage is anticipated to last about an hour, barring complications.

Adolph was born in Sweden and homesteaded in Township 149 east of Max in 1910. This is our first family reunion in Max. We have rented the Max Civic Center for those days. Do you know if it would be possible to get the Mayor of Max or a local official to issue a welcome letter and attend our dinner on Saturday evening? My Uncle is Ray Olson. Thank you for your time. Leona Gullickson Guttormson, 97, passed away July 3rd. Leona lived in Max before moving to Minot. She lived in the house on Main Street that had a beautiful lace doily hanging in its window! She did a lot of memorable crafts, including crocheting doilies with a family name on them. Her funeral was Monday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Benedict. We extend our sincere sympathy to Leona's family.

52 year old Mike Walz, formerly of Max, passed away in his Williston home on July 3rd. Mike's parents were Martin and Twila Walz. Many knew Mike and his parents and many know his brothers and sisters that are living. His funeral was held in Williston on Monday and the interment of his cremated remains will take place at a later date in Max. We express our sincere sympathy to Mike's family.

Amy Hauf, Director of the Max Community Library will be having a training session on Wednesday July 17th at 7 p.m. in the library for anyone who would like to learn how to use overdrive and zinio. Overdrive is for online library books to use on your ipad, ipod, nook, kindle, mp3 or computer. Zinio is online magazines to use on ipad or computers.

Lila Fannik and Carolyn Barden, along with many others from the area went to Bismarck for Barry Lee's benefit, to help cover his medical and travel expenses.

Former Maxites visited in and around Max on Tuesday. Julie Timothy Brude, daughter of the late Sam and Ruth Timothy, came from Bismarck where she is now working. She and her husband, Jim, lived in Amelia, Ohio.

Marge Devnich Seifert and her husband Paul came from Ooltewah, TN and also visited around. Marge is the daughter of the late Sam and Esther Devnich. One stop they all made was at Lila Fannik's. Lorna Sambor joined them for a visit and a picture. Do you recognize them?

That evening Marge and Paul joined up with most of the Zaderaka's for supper at Royal Fork in Minot where Paul could finally have his brownie treat!  (A private joke.) Everyone went to Mark and Lori Zaderaka's home to continue their visiting.

If you have not taken part in this fresh fruit and fresh vegetable 'shopping', please call Jessica Henne at 679-2256 to learn how to get registered. Your produce will arrive in Max the following Saturday, July 20th.
