Child Evangelism Good News Club has been meeting at the school for 6 weeks. The last day will be Dec. 22nd which will be the birthday party for Jesus. There has been a good turnout.

Word has been received that Joan Postovit Tate passed away on July 27th. She had been in poor health for some time. We extend our sympathy to the family and friends.

Little Hoppers has daycare openings for kids 18 months or older. Contact Jessica Henne at henne4u@rocketmail.com

A request has come in on the Max website that maybe some of you can help with. Nancy Holmberg Vaughn - nancyandken@roadrunner.com - has written: "Hello, Max, ND! My grandparents, Alfred & Matilda Holmberg immigrated from Sweden to Max in 1904. My dad and his 5 siblings were all born in Max and then moved to Pennsylvania in the mid 1920's. I have been doing a little family research and have hit lots of dead ends. I do have some pictures of the 'farming' Holmberg family, all of which have now passed away. I do have a couple of my dad's McLean County school attendance certificates and a somewhat tattered Confirmation Certificate from Zion Lutheran Church dated 1922. I have a faint copy of my dad's birth certificate, but I was wondering if there is any place I can contact to get copies of birth certificates for his siblings. There is no one left in the family to obtain this information from. I wish to document as much as possible for my family. Thank you for any assistance you can provide! Loved visiting your website to see where my dad grew up. Hopefully, can visit you some day!!"

October 11th is going to get here soon, just like all these summer months have come and gone!! Get your tickets for the Steak Fry, being held on October 11th! There are 100 tickets available for the meal being served from 5-6:30 p.m. There are 200 meal and entertainment tickets for the serving from 6:30-8 p.m. All of these meal and entertainment tickets will be put into a drawing for door prizes. *Must be present to win*.

The entertainment is to be the Fun Pianos - traveling dueling pianos show by 176 Keys playing from 9-11 p.m.  Make sure to purchase your tickets to cover this entertainment too.

School is starting - please drive carefully!

Tomorrow, Friday the 22nd the Max Senior Citizens will be having their potluck and meeting at 6 p.m. With school starting, the good salad bar meal should be available to the Seniors attending.

Looking for fresh garden produce? Come to the Farmer's Market being held on Main Street, Max, in front of the cafe. Everyone is welcome to come weekly and set up a table and sell their garden produce, baked goods, jams/jellies, fruits. On Wednesdays it will begin at 10 a.m. and Saturdays it will begin at 9:30 a.m. This will continue weekly until September 20 or as long as there are vendors interested. There is no fee to set up. Tell others!

Congratulations to Shawn and Nicole (McElwain) Fritel on the birth of their daughter, Bostyn Lynn Fritel. She was born July 24th. Everyone is welcome to enjoy her baby shower being held on August 9th from 1:30-3:30 at the Max Senior Center. Congratulations!

The next big event in Max is the Summer Solstice Celebration, with the rodeo, Light the Night 5K Walk/Run, 29-sale City-Wide Rummage Sale plus vendors, community church service, and more.
Remember: One man's junk is another's treasure! Don't miss out on Max's City Wide Rummage Sales on August 2nd. Maps showing locations may be picked up at Cenex, the Cafe, and Bremer Bank on Friday or you can print them off on www.maxnd.com

Look for these in the Max Civic Center: Perfectly Posh, Down on the Farm Designs, Cloud 9, Britty Britches, Jewelry in Candles, Tupperware, Avon, Collings Custom Crafts, Wildtree, Norwex, Homemade Memories, Scentsy, Pink Zebra, Dove Chocolate, Pampered Chef, Clever Container, Cookie Lee, Youniqu, Makeup Eraser, Matilda Jane, Juice Plus, and Maxi Skirts. Rummage sales shown on the map and the vendors will all be open on Saturday, August 2nd from 9-3.

There is still time to pre-register for Friday August 1st Light the Night 5K Run/Walk. Contact Lesli Talbott for more details. Registration will start at 8:30 p.m. with the run starting at 9 p.m. along with the street dance.

Then join us Sunday for a community worship service at 11 a.m. in the city park. This will be held in the hall if it rains! Bring your own chair or blanket, beverages, and a dish to share for potluck!

Lila Fannik, Lorna Sambor, and Carolyn Barden, attended Don Haugeberg's 90th birthday party in Minot on Saturday. They then attended Sherman and Janice Peterson's 50th anniversary celebration. LaDonna and Roy Hupsky's 3 children were there: Mike, Michelle, and Danny. There were a lot of relatives from all over in attendance.  But their Saturday wasn't done yet....they then attended the reception for Bethany Johnson's and Drew Haner's wedding.

Now, hold onto your hats, it is going to be even busier in Max with a new event, "Farmer's Market". It will be on Main Street in front of the Cafe. The first one will be Saturday, August 9th at 9:30 a.m. and then on Wednesday, August 13th at 10 a.m. Depending on the type of response to this, it will be decided if the Farmers Market should be held one day a week or two days a week. This is open to anyone who wants to bring their produce, jams, baked items, etc., to sell. There won't be any type of fee......but try to bring your own table and chair. There will be signs along the highways informing travelers of this Farmers Market. Hopefully they will pull in. Call 679-2499 if you have any questions.

And still, Save the Date: October 11th. Civic Club is excited to announce that the steak fry will be held Saturday, October 11th with the Fun Pianos show by 176 Keys Traveling Dueling Pianos. More details will come sometime in August.

I received a very fitting 'calendar' of sorts, just what the city of Max needs right now! This August of 2014 will have 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays, and 5 Sundays. This phenomenon occurs only once every 823 years. The last time was in 1191 and next time will be in 2837!

Welcome to the North Dakota State Fair going on in Minot this week! We don't need to read any headlines about it...we can 'feel' it with the extreme heat these last few days. Please be careful in this heat.

The big events in Max are just a few short weeks away. City Wide Garage Sales start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 2nd and run until 3 p.m. or however long you want to keep yours open. You may start your own rummage sale any day but only the sales open on that Saturday will be marked on the map.

Then, be sure to save this date: October 11th. The Max Civic Club is excited to announce that the Steak Fry will be held Saturday, October 11th with the Fun Pianos show by 176 Keys Traveling Dueling Pianos. More details to come in August.

June 19, 2014

Lorna Sambor and her bird Peko recently returned from a month long stay in Minneapolis with her daughter Connie. While there she was able to attend the Minnesota Family Council banquet with Dr. Ben Carson as the featured speaker. This was the highlight of the trip as she got to meet him after the banquet and obtain a copy of his latest book, "One Nation".

She attended a southern gospel concert with Legacy Five Quartet, a Bluegrass concert, and attended one of the last productions of the Church Basement Ladies, "The Last Potluck Supper". These productions will cease to exist after June as they are no longer having these plays after many years running.

She attended Connie's church, Radisson Road Baptist, and was able to visit with people she knew from previous trips.

Lorna was also able to spend time with her grandson Mark & his friend Julie, her niece Kathy Kresbach, her son Tony & wife Tiffany, and their son Sawyer, nephew Clay Narum & his wife Sharon, & long time neighbor and friend, Janet Berke Carlson.

All in all it was a good time, but of course, there is no place like home.

August 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will be the Max Summer Solstice and Jessica Henne is looking for people interested in having a rummage sale in the city wide sales. If you are interested in having a sale this year and would like to get your name on the map, please call her at 679-2256 or email at henne4u@rocketmail.com. Payment and descriptions will not need to be turned in until mid July but we are looking to make this a HUGE EVENT.

There will also be room at the hall and at churches for people who wish to set up a sale but do not have a place in town. We also have vendors interested in setting up so if you sell anything and would like a spot, please let her know!  All rummage sale and vendor spots are only $5.00 to get your name put on the map. Anyone having tables at the hall or church will get a section of 3 tables; if more are needed then you will pay for additional sections.

Throughout the summer, Meals on Wheels will be served at noon on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at the Max Senior Center. This meal is brought to the Center hot and for a very reasonable price. Call any Senior Citizen for more information.

We extend our sympathy to Ronnie Hauf and family in the death of his wife, mother, and grandmother, Jan, at a Minot Nursing Home.

There was quite a large group attending the noon potluck and meeting at the Senior Citizens' Center last Friday. Reminder: The next Senior potluck and meeting will be held at 6 p.m., not at noon.

While eating peas at the potluck, one member requested honey for the peas and this explanation was given: "I eat my peas with honey. I've done this all my life. It makes my peas taste funny, but it keeps them on my knife!

On May 16, a Friday, Kyle will be at the Senior Center with his flowers and plants for anyone to purchase. He will be there from 3-7 only. Bars and coffee will be served. No bake sale this year and no pie!! The day is Older American Day.

Don't forget about getting ahold of Jessica Henne if you would like to have a garage sale during the City Wide Sales, August 1-3.

Quite a few wished Marian Schmidt a Happy Birthday last Saturday, at the Max Cafe.  We helped Florene Knudtson celebrate her birthday, a month late. Her husband had to be taken to the hospital on her birthday when the get-together was planned, so she couldn't be there.

April 24, 2014

We have had some beautiful weather, especially on Easter Sunday. There would be more spring-like days, if the wind didn't blow so hard!! There probably isn't any state in the U.S. where the wind doesn't blow, though.

We received a note from Eugene's sister, Evelyne Zaderaka Scovill, living in Shelby, North Carolina, saying they had frost two mornings last week that damaged the strawberry crop and the peach blossoms. Two of our grandchildren just returned from a school sponsored trip to Washington, D.C. and brought back pictures of the beautiful cherry trees in bloom, saying it was the 'prime cherry blossom season'.

Anyone doing spring cleaning, and others, will appreciate this news. August 1-3 will be the Max Summer Solstice and Jessica Henne is looking for people interested in having a rummage sale in the city wide sales. If you are interested in having a sale this year and would like to get your name on the map, please call her at 679-2256 or email her at henne4u@rocketmail.com. Payment and descriptions will not need to be turned in until mid July but we are looking to make this a HUGE event. There will also be room at the hall and at churches for people that wish to set up a sale but do not have a place in town. We also have vendors interested in setting up so if you sell anything and would like a spot, please let her know! All rummage sale and vendor spots are only $5 to get your name put on the map. Anyone having tables at the hall or church will get a section of 3 tables, and if more are needed then, you will pay for additional sections.

Tomorrow, Friday April 25th, is the Max Senior Citizens' noon potluck and meeting.

March 10, 2014

About 36 couples attended the Max High School Prom this past Saturday evening. They were dressed in their finest! The public is always invited to come and watch the Grand March.

This coming Monday, April 14th the Max Civic Club will meet at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

If you have anything interesting, comical, serious, just mail it to me or e-mail or even just phone me.  I'll make sure it goes in the Max News for others to share.
