Thursday May 26th 2016

The Last day of classes at Max Public School for this school year will be today Thursday May 26th 2016. High School Graduation is planned for Saturday May 28th at 2:00 pm in the School Gymnasium.
Max Community Library will be closed on Monday May 30th in observation of Memorial
Day.
                Just a reminder if you are registered for Our Saviors Lutheran Church’s Vocational Bible Day Camp it will begin Tuesday May 31st – Thursday June 2nd from 9am-3pm daily.
                We are getting excited for another fantastic Summer Reading Program at the Max Community Library! Amy Hauf is our director this year and has a great program ready for us! The theme for this year is “On Your Mark Get Set Read” for Pre-K – 12th grades. Readers of all ages will explore all things sports and fitness this summer at our Summer Reading Program. The schedule will run as follows:  Monday’s in June at 10:30 am (June 6,13,20,27, & July 11) in the library.  July 18th will be our grand finale picnic held at the Max City Park right next to the library at 11:30. We will serve a free lunch at 11:30 to all participants. Weekly prizes will be given to those who choose to participate in the book report program. The grand prizes will be given out at the picnic in the park.  To qualify for the grand prizes, each student will receive a form that will be stamped each time they participate.  Once they get four stamps and finish their reading goals they will be qualified for the awesome grand prizes.  We have 5 Kindle Fire 7”. We have 1 for each group of grades (Pre-K) (1st&2nd )  (3rd & 4th) (5th & 6th  ) & (7th  – 12th ). Criteria to qualify for the grand prizes: Pre-K - Read 10 books during the program and provide the titles to library staff and attend 4 Summer Reading Sessions. 1st &2nd grades – Read 12 books during the program and provide titles to library staff and attend 4 Summer Reading Sessions. 3rd through 6th grades – Read 500 pages or 360 minutes during the program and provide time or titles to library staff and attend 4 Summer Reading Sessions. 7th through 12th grades – Read 1000 pages or 500 minutes during the program and provide time or titles to library staff and HELP WITH- 4 Summer Reading Sessions.
 You must be here to help during 4 Summer Reading Sessions to be eligible.

                The landfill is now open on Wednesday Evenings from 6pm-9pm and the second
Saturday of the month from 9am-12pm.

The Rolling Hills Lumber Yard located just north of Max on Highway 83 owned by Loren and Tammy Delzer is now open for business.
The second community clean- up day will be held on Saturday May 21st 2016 from 9am- 4pm. During the clean-up day the landfill will accept items such as, appliances, furniture, trees, branches and other items, free of charge. No household garbage or plastic bags will be permitted.
The Alumni Meeting previously scheduled for Sunday May 15th will be held on Sunday May 22nd at 2pm in the Senior Center.
                The Planning and Zoning meeting previously scheduled for 7:00pm on Monday May 23rd is now scheduled for 6:30pm in the City Hall.

                The Deadline to sign up for Drivers Education is May 26th. The sign- up sheet is in the school office. The class room dates for this are June 27th – July 21st.
                The elementary school will be enjoying a field trip to Fort Stevens State Park on May 24th as a reward for all their hard work during this school year.

The Kindergarten Program is on Thursday May 26th at 10:00 am at the Max Public School Gymnasium.

On Sunday May 15th there will be a 75th Birthday Open House for Sharon Strilcor. Join family and friends to help her celebrate at Immanual Baptist Church, 1615 2nd Street SE Minot ND from 2pm-4pm. No gifts please. 
               Max Public School’s Drama club Presents Prom Night Fright. The play will be tomorrow Friday May 13th 2016 in the School Gymnasium. They will have two showings a matinee during school at 1:30 and an evening showing at 7pm. A free will donation will be collected during the matinee and a small fee will be charged for the evening showing. Come out and support the Drama club and enjoy the evening of entertainment.
               On Monday May 16th the Max Community Library will be having Adult Coloring Club from
1:30-3:30 pm. This will be the last one before summer and we will start again in September. The Library still has plenty of copies of Julie McElwain’s book “A Murder in Time.” Stop in during library hours for your copy. The Summer Reading Program will be kicking off on June 6th with Moore’s Karate at 10:30. If your child is school age a sign-up sheet will be sent home with him/her from school before the end of the school year. If your child is not school age they can still participate in the program come in the Library for a sign-up sheet. I will have more information on the Summer Reading Program in the news as we get closer to June.
               Max Public School students will be having a volunteer Talent Show in the school gymnasium on Tuesday May 17th at 2pm.

Max Public School’s Music department will have their spring concert on Tuesday May 10th at 7pm in the Max Gymnasium. There will be refreshments served following the concert in recognition of Mrs. Zabka’s 31 years of service to the Max School District. This will be Mrs. Zabka’s last concert she will be retiring at the end of this school year. Thank You to all of her hard work and years of service to our School District.
               Max Library Partners will meet at the Library on Thursday May 12th 2016 at 5pm for their quarterly meeting.
               Kyle’s Greenhouse will be at the Senior Center on Friday May 13th from 3pm-7pm. Stop in and pick up bedding pots, flowers, and decorative pots for your spring planting.

Brooke Schroeder had her last dance competition in Billings this past weekend. She received High Gold and placed 5th overall on her solo. Her team received High Gold and one Lightening Rod. Congratulations on your dancing accomplishments.
               The Annual Activities Banquet will be Thursday May 5th 2016 in the School Gymnasium beginning at 6:00 pm with the program to follow. This will include Junior High and High School Boys and Girls Basketball, Cross Country, Pep Club, M- Club, 4C-Club, Drama, Speech, Honor Society, Student Council, Yearbook, and Co-op sports with Garrison.

There is no school in Max on Friday April 22nd.
               There will be a woman’s community prayer service at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church on April 24th at 2:00. Everyone from the community and surrounding area are invited to attend. There will be salads and desserts provided with fellowship following the prayer service.
               On Friday April 22 the seniors will be having their monthly meeting with a potluck meal at 6:00 pm.
               The last Administrative Professional day this school year will be Wednesday April 27th. The students will be released at 1:20.
               The Max Public School Pre-school program will be on Thursday April 28th at 10am in the Max Civic Center on Main Street, Max. This will be the last day for Pre-School for this school year.
               The Pops Concert will be on Thursday April 28th at 7:00 in the Max School Gym. There will be a matinee at 2:00.
               Noel Ide, Jessica, Christina, and Stephaine Bingham will be going on tour with the Western Plains Children’s Choir, under the direction of Rebbeca Petrik. They will be touring the following schools Bell, South Prairie, Max, Wilton, and Bismarck, North Dakota on April 29th.  The performance at Max will be at 11:30 and open to the public.

Saturday April 16th is the Max High School Prom. The Grand March will be at 8:00 pm in the Max Public School Gymnasium.
                Belinda Zabka has started a fitness program in Max. This program is on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 in the Max Civic Center on Main Street in Max. Everyone is welcome to attend.
                The Max Community Library will be having adult coloring on Monday April 18th from 1:30-3:30 at the library.
                Julie McElwain’s book A Murder in Time has been released and copies are available for purchase at a discounted price at the Max Community Library. We will be reading this book for our book club on April 29th 2016 at 7:00. This will be our final book club meeting until the fall.

The Ag students and FFA members are making benches for the city of Max. They  are looking for individual/businesses to sponsor a bench. Each bench will be made out of composite material and the students will grow flowers for the planter boxes. They will also have a plaque saying who it was sponsored by or in memory of! If you are interested in sponsoring one please contact Jessica Henne or Amanda Buynak Huettl for more details.

There will be a All-School Reunion meeting on April 17th at the Max Senior Center at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to attend and help plan.

During the All-School Reunion a 5k run/walk will be held on June 25th 2016 @ 8am from the Max High School. Registration forms are available at business in town.

The All School Reunion is looking for entries for the parade that will be held on June 25th. The deadline for entry is June 15th 2016. Contact Travis at 701-679-2522 or 701-836-3043 for more details.

Registration for Max Summer Recreation will be open until April 15th 2016. Sara Ruhland will be running this program and her contact information is 701-529-4858 or 701-337-6260. This program options are T-Ball Boys and Girls ages 4-7, Pee Wee boys and girls ages 7-12, Girls softball ages 10 to going into 12th grade, and Little League boys and girls Ages 10-14.

Students 3-8 and 11 are in the middle of taking their State Assessments. A good breakfast and plenty of rest is recommended when they are testing. You can find out when they are testing from your students teacher or Mrs Kersten.

Jayden Huesers took home the 3rd place trophy from State Peewee Wrestling in Bismarck on March 26th at the Bismarck Civic Center. He was competing against 22 other wrestlers from his age group.

Max Community Library will be having the last Pre-school Story Hour for this school year on Monday April 11th at 2:30.The Library will begin story hour again in the fall.

Today March 31st is parent teacher conferences at Max Public School lasting until 9pm. Be sure to stop in for supper and support the Honor Society. They will be serving Taco in a Bag and Ice Cream in the lunch room from 5:30 -7pm. Parents can also stock up on books for their children at the school book fair happening in the School Library.

Just a reminder for patrons of Max Farm Services and Max Farmers Elevator your annual meeting are approaching. Max Farm Service is Tuesday April 5 with a lunch served at noon and a meeting to follow. Max Farmers Elevator is Tuesday April 12 will a 6pm supper and meeting to follow.


Max Community Library has replaced its interior door with a new glass door. Stop in the hall at the library and have a look and bring some news you would like to share with the public.

Thursday March 31st will be parent teacher conferences starting after school lasting until 9:00pm. The Honor Society will be serving taco in a bag and ice cream from 5:30-7:00pm for supper in the lunch room.

The Max School Library will be having their spring book fair week starting with an open house Monday March 28th from 10am-2pm. The hours for Tuesday and Wednesday are 8am-4:30pm. During parent teacher conferences on Thursday the book fair will be open 8am-9pm and ending on 
Friday at 4:00pm.

Our condolences go out to Eunice Hausauer’s family. Eunice passed away this past Thursday. Eunice was a retired teacher from Max public school.

Looking around town 2 abandoned houses have been demolished and clean up is underway.

The City of Max will be adding a new service feature to garbage collection day to better serve the public. Each resident will be provided a residential cart (tote).This will improve the appearance of your neighborhood on garbage day.  A letter will be sent out to residents with more information and start date.

I am excited to take over the Max News for Margaret. Thank You Margaret for all your years of writing the Max News.  I can be reached by e-mail at maxndnews@gmail.com or I am available in person at the Max Community Library on Main Street in Max on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. During the All-School Reunion the Max Community Library will be hosting a book signing by Julie McElwain. Her first novel “A Murder in Time” has been published and has a release date in April. Julie will be at the All-School Reunion and ready to talk about and sign copies of her book. The Library will have copies available for purchase. Her book has been selected by Librarians across the U.S. for their Library Reads book list for April. We are excited to add this event to the All-School Reunion on June 25th.

Former Max/Benedict resident Inez Mae Nelson passed away March 4th 2016. She was 94. Her current address was Newberg, Oregon.

Congratulations to Aric and Lisa Hauf on the birth of their son Grayson Peter. Grayson was born on Saturday March 12th weighing 7lbs 11 oz, 21 inches long. Grandparents are Tammy and Larry Hauf of Max and Pete and Connie Miller of Bismarck.

Gloria Henne celebrated her 80th birthday on March 13th in Mesa Arizona. If you wish to send her greetings, her address in Arizona is: 306 S Recker Road #130, Mesa AZ 85206. No gifts please.

Friday, March 4th at 2:30 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Max there will be a World Day of Prayer service, led by Pastor Stark. Fellowship will follow the service.

Jessica Henne is taking over the Community Calendar and asks that all information be submitted to her by the 15th. of each month. There are some additions to the March calendar that she was unable to put in before printing, such as: the BJHBB game on the 5th has been moved to the 8th at 6 p.m. Also, there will be Story Hour on Monday March 14th at 2:30 and Adult Coloring at the Library on Monday, March 21st from 1:30-3 p.m.

There is also a Library Partner's Annual Meeting on Monday, March 14th at 5:45 p.m.  Don't forget to turn your clocks ahead on Sunday March 13th!

This coming Friday, the 26th, the Max Senior Citizens will be having their potluck at approximately 12:30, with the meeting following. Speaker at the meeting will talk about  signs of Alzheimers. Everyone is welcome.

The next Friday, March 4th, is World Day of Prayer service at 2:30, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Max. Rev. Jonathon Stark of the Ryder Calvary Church will lead. Everyone is welcome to attend. There will be a fellowship time following the service.

Great Grandma Lila Fannik attended Avery Fannik's 2nd birthday on Valentine's Day. Avery is the daughter of Casey and Amanda Fannik and Granddaughter of Dennis and Karla Fannik.  A lot of grandparents and great-grandparents enjoyed Avery's special day!

A big reminder: The Max Alumni Reunion will be held this coming June 24-26, 2016.  These next months will go by quickly so mail in your cards with your updated information and clear your calendar so you can attend the reunion. The reunion planning meetings are still being held at the Senior Center in Max.

And now we have word that there will be a parade, hopefully! This will depend on your personal or business involvement. The parade is being planned for June 25th and if anyone knows they plan on entering, please contact Travis Samson at 701-836-3043.

Friday, February 26th the Senior Citizens will meet for their noon potluck at 12:30.  There will be a speaker at the meeting, following the meal, speaking about the signs of Alzheimers. This is open to the public.

Sunday, February 14th is Valentine's Day and also the Free Will breakfast of french toast, scrambled eggs, and sausage, along with a bake sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., all at the Max City Hall. All proceeds will go to Our Savior Church's "Raise the Roof" fundraiser. If you would like to donate baked goods for the bake sale, please get ahold of Jessica Henne.

Our Savior Lutheran Church's Food Bank will be open on Monday, the 15th, from 1-3 and again from 5-7.

In a few weeks, February 26th, the Max Senior Citizens will have their potluck at 12:30, followed by a meeting where Michele Effertz will speak about the ten signs of Alzheimers. This is open to the public.

Monday, February 8th, come on down to the Max City at 6:30 p.m. for a free meal provided by the Max Civic Club.  Sloppy Joe's, pickles, chips, salads, desserts, and live music by Furnace (a local band of high school teens). Following the meal there will be a brief Civic Club meeting and election of officers. Please come and support the Civic Club organization!

The fourth Friday of the month is this coming Friday, 22nd, and is the noon potluck with meeting to follow for the Max Senior Citizens.

Then Sunday, the 24th, there will be another planning meeting for the Max Alumni Reunion. This is held at the Max Senior Citizens building at 2 p.m. The Max Reunion is set for June 24-26 of 2016. Postcards with information about registration and updating information for the book have been sent out.  If you have not received one, send your updated address to wkjh@restel.net so the database can be updated.

The February 8th supper meeting for the Civic Club is also their membership drive.  Entertainment will be provided.  Watch your free Community Calendar for February for more information on this event.  Read the back of this month's Community Calendar for information on what all the Civic Club can do for the community and for your children.

The Max Cafe will be closed on Monday, January 25th and bingo has returned to Southside Lounge on Tuesdays.  Sponsored by GAIA.  For more information, contact the Lounge.

The next planning meeting for the Max Alumni Reunion will be held on Sunday, January 24 at 2 p.m. at the Max Senior Citizen Center.  The reunion is set for June 24-26, 2016.  Postcards with information about registration and updating information for the book have been sent out.  If you have not received one, send your updated address to wkjh@restel.net so the database can be updated.

Mark your calendars to attend the Max Civic Club meal and meeting in February on the 8th.  This is the membership drive and entertainment will be provided. Watch the monthly calendar with more details.

This coming Saturday evening, the 16th, is the Max High Homecoming in Max, playing against Our Redeemers Lutheran Church from Minot.

Monday, January 18th, there will be a coloring class for adults at the Max Library at 2 p.m.  You may bring your own coloring books and colored pencils but these will also be provided.

Max has a need for a food pantry and you will find one at Our Savior Lutheran Church. This will be open every third Monday of the month from 2-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. The next opening is Monday, January 18th.

The following Friday, 22nd, is the Max Senior Citizens' noon potluck and meeting. That is the fourth Friday in January.

Lorna Sambor had lunch guests at her home Wednesday afternoon: The Rev. Dan Shell from Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Minot, Lorna's daughter Phyllis, Phyllis Narum and Lila Fannik. They all had a wonderful afternoon.

Congratulations to the NDSU Bison football team on winning their 5th title game in a row, in Frisco, Texas this past Saturday.

The early deadlines for news during the holidays are past. Remember, I now can type out and e-mail the news to the Independent on Sunday evenings, so please have your news to me by then.

This very next Sunday, January 10th at 1:30, there will be a baby shower for Aric and Lisa Hauf at St. Matthews Church in Max. They have registered at Target and it's a boy!! I wasn't able to put this in a week earlier because of the early deadline so I hope now isn't too late for you to plan on attending.

Civic Club will be meeting on Monday, January 11th at 7 p.m. Please read over all the information about Civic Club that is on the back of your free Community Calendar. This month's calendar is yellow.
