Lila Fannik and Lorna Sambor recently returned from a trip to Minneapolis for a few days. They traveled by Amtrak to get to there, with Connie Sambor picking up her Mother and Aunt at the depot

On Friday and Saturday they enjoyed such a blessed time at Gospel Quartet concerts. So many quartets and so much beautiful harmony and wonderful messages.

Sunday they traveled to St. Paul to visit Keith Meronuck (Richard and Rose's son) who has M.S. His Mother, brother Chris, and wife Jane were there also. Connie took them back home. On the way they stopped at Hoffman, Minnesota to visit with their cousin, Roy Johnson.

Notice: Closing the prescription drug coverage gap with a $250 rebate will help you with your Medicare drug costs. The Affordable Care Act passed by Congress and signed by President Obama this year contains some important benefits for Medicare recipients. If you have Medicare prescription drug coverage, and aren't already getting Medicare Extra Help, Medicare will automatically send you a one-time $250 rebate check after you reach the coverage gap (also called the "donut hole") in 2010. This rebate is the first step toward closing the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap.

"What is the coverage gap and how will I know if I've reached it?" Most Medicare drug plans have a coverage gap. This means that after you and your plan have spent a certain amount of money for covered drugs, you have to pay all costs out-of-pocket for your drugs (up to a limit). The Explanation of Benefits notice, which your drug plan mails to you each month when you fill a prescription, will tell you how much you've spent on covered drugs and whether you've entered the coverage gap.

"Will I need to do anything to get this rebate check?" No. There are no forms to fill out. Medicare will automatically send you a check that's made out to you. You DON'T need to provide any personal information like your Medicare, Social Security, or bank account numbers to get the rebate check. DON'T GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO ANYONE WHO CALLS YOU ABOUT THE $250 REBATE CHECK. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to report anyone who does this. TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048.

Go to "stopmedicarefraud.gov" to learn more about how Medicare is working with law enforcement to stop scams against seniors. If you have other questions about the rebate check or the Affordable Care Act and Medicare, you may visit www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE, (1-800-633-4227).

Again - don't forget to phone Lynae Schroeder at 679-2505 if you want your child or children to take swimming lessons this summer.

Bad weather and roads once again got in the way of Clean Up Day for Max. It has not been rescheduled but if you have things to take to the dump grounds, please contact the City Auditor's office at 679-2770 to make an appointment to have the gates opened.

The weather didn't get in the way of having a successful Older Americans' Day at the Max Over 55 Club building. Kyle's Greenhouse, with plants of all kinds, was set up inside the building, as they were last year, too. Much more comfortable shopping and the plants aren't competing with the wind. The bake goods sale was exceptional with table after table being removed once the goodies on each table were sold. The winners of the raffle drawings were: quilt to Karla Fannik; afghan to Ethel Boettcher; special books were won by Vicki Fure and Dellora Schmidt; the poinsettia doily was won by Nicole McElwain; the hand painted picture done by Ellie Lindquist was won by Kenneth Jungling; and the queen size bed sheet set was won by Annika Huesers. The door prize drawn went to Karen Berg.

The Sky Warning training held at the Max Civic Center on Tuesday evening had approximately 53 in attendance, according to KXMC's weatherman. Many from the surrounding towns attended.

Swimming lessons will be available again this summer. The first session runs June 7 - 11 and the second session August 2 - 6. The swimming lessons will be at the YMCA from 2:00 - 3:30 and the cost is $32.50 per child. Please call Lynae Schroeder at 679-2505 to register your child(ren). Space is limited as we will be using the mini bus, so call today to sign up!

Graduation time is upon us with Max's Kindergarten graduation being held at 10:00 a.m. on next Friday, May 21st. This is also the last day of school. Max's High School graduation ceremony will begin at 2:00 the following day, a Saturday, May 22nd.

Refer to the back of your free Community Calendar for information on the Summer Reading Program at the Max Community Library. It all begins June 3rd.

Hours are from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. and a free carnation will be presented to each Mother eating there, as long as the supply lasts! You can celebrate Mother's Day and honor your loved one without even leaving town - how wonderful.

Quite a few ladies gathered at the Max Senior Center last week to celebrate Marian Schmidt's and Linda Hayne's birthdays, only a day apart. It was alot of fun visiting and laughs.

There are many quality items to be raffled off - you do not need to be present to win. This is open to the public.

The Senior Citizens recent monthly potluck and meeting included many men and women in attendance. There was some impromptu entertainment that had everyone in tears with laughter! We have a winner!

Well, winners, actually.

The Max Plunge ended at 3:29 pm on April 8th when the jumbo can poised on the ice of Elbow Lake in Max fell through. The winning guess fell within one minute of the time of submersion. Second and third places guessed within two minutes, and fourth place within three minutes of the plunge. That's some great guessing!

The top four winners were:

1st: Chad Wimer of Garrison - $500

2nd: Jason Strand of Surrey - $250

3rd: Amanda Iverson of Bismarck - $100

4th: Paul Schlichting of Garrison - $50

Max Park Board member Raymond Iverson reported that the Plunge was a great success this year, raising $200 more than last year for Max Parks. He says that most of the proceeds from the Plunge will go to purchasing new picnic tables for the city parks.

Congratulations to all Max Plunge 2010 winners!

April 8, 2010

The Max News is written each week by Margaret Zaderaka.

Once again most everyone in the area has their electricity! You wouldn't expect a storm in early April to cause poles to break and lines to come down, but they did. Maybe spring will show up soon.

The Max High School prom is this coming Saturday evening, with the Grand March starting at 8 p.m. It is open to the public so you can see all the beautiful gowns and handsome tuxedos. We hope the students will have good weather and have a wonderful and safe time.

Monday, April 12th the Max Civic Club will meet at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center. On Friday, April 16th the Max High students will be performing their play at 1:30 in the afternoon and again in the evening at 7 p.m.

But before that is Dairyland Donkey Basketball, sponsored by the Max Boys Basketball Team. This will be on Thursday, April 14th, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Max School gym. This can also be called the "Craziest Show on Earth!" The first game will be the Fantastic Cossacks vs. Max Dynamite Faculty with the second game the Max Ranchers vs. the Max Superstars. Tickets are required for those in first grade through adult and can be purchased from the Max Boys BB players or you may contact the Max School at 679-2685.

But there is more - there will be free donkey rides for kids 12 years old and under! This will definitely be a fun-filled night of basketball! Come enjoy it!

There will be a Baby Shower for Athena Louise, daughter of Becky Schmaltz & Ed Kranz on Saturday, April 17th at the Max Senior Center at 2pm. Everyone Welcome!

The Max Public School is collecting data to estimate future class sizes. You are to contact the school at 679-2685 if you have a child who is 4 years or younger.

The City Maintenance position in Max is open. Please phone (701) 679-2770 before April 1st. for more information.

The Max Over 55 Club meeting this past Friday was very well attended and a lot of business was tended to. They are still collecting Our Family product bar codes. Give them to any member or leave them at the Senior Center.

We want you all to know that the Senior Center may be rented out for $50 for many uses, like small family gatherings, Easter and other holidays, family reunions, birthdays, anniversaries, bridal or baby showers etc. You do not need to be a member nor a senior to rent this building. What a nice clean roomy place to hold your event. Just contact Joy Lies, President or any other senior member.

On May 8th, when Older Americans' Day is celebrated at the Senior Center, Kyle's Greenhouse will be there from Garrison and is donating a plant that will be given as the door prize for the day. Free pie and coffee will be served. You will also find a bake sale going on at this event, in time for Mother's Day.

The next regular meeting of the Over 55 Club will be held on April 23rd at 6 p.m. with a potluck meal and the business meeting to follow. We will be meeting at this time during the summer, instead of noon as we have all winter.

There used to be regulars who played cards several days each week at the Senior Center. They have moved to Minot or passed away. But what about you men still in Max? You could play pool too, to fill your afternoons. Give each other a call to see what you can do together, using the Senior Center. It is too nice a building to sit there unused the majority of the time. If you need peace and quiet - or even if you don't, go put a jig saw puzzle together at the Senior Center - there are plenty there to choose from and plenty of tables so the puzzle may be left up.

Don't forget about giving your donation to the Max School towards the new bleachers in the gym.

Tomorrow, Friday, the Senior Citizens will be having their potluck at noon, with the meeting to follow. It is requested that you bring non-perishable food items that will be taken back to the food pantry by the Resource Center's representative, who will be attending the meeting.

Sunday, March 28th the Class of 2013 will be serving a pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 1 p.m. at the Civic Center in Max.

This past Sunday's breakfast served by the Max Senior Citizens had a very good turnout with many coming from the surrounding areas. Tickets were sold for the raffle that will be taking place during Older American's Day at the Senior Center on May 8th. This is also the day that Kyle's Greenhouse comes with their plants. To obtain raffle tickets, talk to any Senior Citizen.

The community of Max is honored to receive a $5000.00 grant to be used by the Max Public Library. Only 5 towns in North Dakota were chosen to receive this grant. It all came about with a program called "More For Everyone", sponsored by Bayer Crop Science in the sale of Invigor Canola Seed in Max, through Chris Krebsbach. The company 'gave back' $1.00 per bag sold, to the communities. Growers in the area who purchased the seed from Chris, nominated the library. Nominations from other towns, too, were all studied by a panel of Bayer Crop Science employees and they in turn chose only five cities to receive their gift. This is all in memory of Bill Huesers who had purchased this seed from Chris before.

In last week's news, I incorrectly stated that Wayne Thompson won the queen-size quilt in the Max Community Library's Soup and Sandwich raffle. It was Wayne Johnson who was the lucky winner!

Vi Kostenko's sister, Clarebelle Trondson of Stanwood, Washington has passed away. She was 82. Her husband Frank Trondson owned the Texaco gas station back in the 1950's in Max. It was located where the present Max Cafe is located now.

Word has been received that Sally Kabanuck's brother, Leonard Dean, has passed away. Many of you may remember these people.

Max, ND Facebook and Blogspot readers: You may see some old Max News or Blog items, as well as some test messages, showing up in your email or on Facebook (depending on how you are connected to the Max, ND Blog) today and over the weekend. Since the recent Facebook layout change, we have been having trouble with the blog's feed into Facebook. I am working on the problem, but likely will have to wait for Facebook to fix this glitch. Thanks for your patience.

The Max Community Library's Soup and Sandwich lunch this past Sunday was very successful even though the area was experiencing blustery weather. Approximately 100 adults and kids attended, with the event raising more than last year's Soup and Sandwich lunch. A big thank you to the Max FFA who helped out in many areas. A couple of vendor booths were there for anyone to make purchases. The raffle was a lot of fun with Wayne Johnson of Max winning the queen-size quilt. Three Cenex C-Store gift certificates, a Scheel's gift certificate, a package from Hair Magic, and a Pampered Chef item were also given away in the raffle. It was a very successful fundraiser for the library.

Elsewhere in Max, the 'Under New Management' Max Cafe was open for its first Sunday. It will continue to be open on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This dinner includes roast pork, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, vegetable, dinner roll and dessert. The proceeds will be used to buy equipment for the firemen. Adults: $12.00 and school age: $7.00.

Thursday, February 18th is the Library Story Hour at 11:30 a.m.

On the following Friday, February 19th from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. there will be the screening of preschool children ages 3, 4, and 5 at the Max Public School. Many in the area were without power over the week-end of January 23-26. We were among those so there was no Max News.

All proceeds go to benefit the Max Community Library and its programs and activities. It is being subsidized by Thrivent. The FHA kids from our Max Public School are going to help serve. Everyone is encouraged to attend and support our community library.

By 7 p.m. that same Sunday, you will be ready to take part in Adult Volleyball held at the Max Public School!

But bring your appetite to the Fire Department's Roast Pork Dinner being held on Sunday the 14th from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Civic Center. That evening you can work it off by playing Adult Volleyball at 7 p.m. at the school.

We extend our sympathy to the Lindquist family, especially to Gordy and his family at Bottineau and other relatives, many in the Max area. Gordy's grandson, 9 year old Brady Lindquist, passed away January 4th from Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy. Brady's father was Anthony Lindquist.

If you haven't heard nor seen, North Dakota had a Christmas Blizzard that kept everyone at home and for those who had arrived, they had to stay. Highway #83, I94, and I29 were all closed down. Beautiful sunny and calm weather did arrive, so the days following Christmas were busy with people plowing out. Minot reported 24 to 30 inches. The Max streets look like they did the winter of 2008-2009 - you probably remember us telling you about that, if you weren't here! They say winter is just starting!

Refer to your new January 2010 Community Calendar for events and meetings.

Happy New Year and may 2010 be full of blessings for you and yours!

The Sunnyslope Homemakers had their Christmas Party last week and had a very good time. On Sunday afternoon the Max Senior Citizens had their Christmas potluck and party and also had a very good time. There was a surprisingly good turnout and Wayne Kabanuck provided us with special music. There was group singing and fun games played, besides all the good food! Gifts were exchanged, once a very fun game was played to see which gift you would receive. Thank you to Lila Fannik and Marian Schmidt for planning such a wonderful program.

A note of interest, the Max Postmaster has inquired about setting up a 'drive by' mailbox in the alley behind the Post Office, only to find out Max cannot be granted one because they fear the alley will not be kept clear of snow in the winters. If you have any other suggestions, please tell the present postmaster.

October 22, 2009

(*This is the first week that the Max News is going out over facebook. Welcome to those who are viewing there for the first time! Weekly news is written by Margaret Zaderaka.)

Once again the area farmers have been stopped in their many attempts to finish their 2009 harvest. Rain and snow are part of the weather now, with a few drying days in between, before it rains or snows again.

Our sympathy goes out to the family of David Lindquist, 58, of Garrison. He is the son of Pauline and the late Walt Lindquist. Walt at one time was the grocery store owner in Max.

And our sympathy also goes out to the family of Marge Semchenko. Marge and Arnold Semchenko are former Max residents with Marge being a sister to Vernon Wenger of Max and Minot. Marge is the sister-in-law of Rita Semchenko and the late Richard Semchenko.

Mona Berke and two of her daughters, Denise and Mary, stopped by to visit with Lorna Sambor and Phyllis Seay on Sunday. It was nice to see them again.

There have been some changes in the Max Library on Main Street, with Amy Hauf taking over for Julie Osadchy. The rumors that the library will be unwilling to renew books and will be going to make it hard to check materials out are totally false. As of January first, the library will be enforcing overdue book fines, and you will not be able to check out more books if you have three or more overdue books already in your possession. All you have to do is stop by the library or phone and the library will renew your books or materials you have checked out. The library will not be automatically renewing materials for people. People need to take responsibility for their own books and/or materials they have checked out. The Library Board just wants to make our library the most efficient it can be, and bring it up to the standards of other libraries in the consortium. If you have any questions, please phone the Library Board President, Tamra Huesers, at 679-2030. How our library is run is a reflection on its patrons and also a reflection on the community of Max.

We extend our sincere sympathy to our Deputy Otto Walth in the loss of his Mother, Lillian Walth. The Walths are from Wishek and her funeral was held there this past Saturday. Otto has a brother living in Bismarck. My sister and Lillian Walth worked together in the kitchen at the Wishek Hospital for many years. I've heard many wonderful things about Otto's Mother.

A son, Thomas Xavier, was born to Pamela and Stuart Goehring of New Salem on September 17th. He is the grandson of Joyce Malling of Max and Marie Goehring of Dickey. Thomas has a sister, Catherine, who is 19 months old.

Carrie Malling and Patrick May were married on September 11th at Wilmington Lutheran Church of Arnegard, ND. A reception and dance were held at the Old School Bed and Breakfast. Family and friends found the Old School quite interesting. Carrie is the daughter of Joyce Malling and the late Leslie Malling.

Wayne and Ingrid Dvirnak of Colorado were weekend guests with Lila Fannik. Many relatives attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Minot where their neice's baby was dedicated. Mary Lushenko, John and Shirley Sizemore, Lorna Sambor and Lila Fannik were all dinner guests then with Pete and Delores Kizima of Minot

John and Alice Dvirnak of Killdeer and their daughter Joyce Lee of Illinois recently came to visit Lila Fannik. They also visited Dennis and Karla Fannik, Caroline and Robert Barden and their son Will, Delvin and Kristie Fannik and their family, and with LaVonne Fannik and Lorna Sambor before returning to their home.

Mary Lushenko served supper in her home last Sunday evening and those there brought birthday greetings to Pam Arnold.

Hannah Zaderaka, daughter of Dean and Heidi Zaderaka of Minot, invited her Grandma Margaret to go with her on her class's field trip to Stanley this past Friday. Twenty-one third graders and 21 adults boarded the school bus at Our Redeemer's Christian School for a short ride to the Amtrak station. They all rode Amtrak to Stanley. A new experience for many! In Stanley, after playing and eating lunches in the park, all toured a one-room school house that was built in 1915. Everyone then boarded the school bus for home - many young and old taking naps as we drove!

For more information, contact Daryl Lies at 337-6698.

There is a notice in Max's website that the gas grills have been removed from the Max City Park. They have been vandalized several times and are beyond repair. No new grills will be put up for the vandals to strike, which is unfortunate for those who would like to use them while enjoying the park.

The Senior Citizens' meeting was well attended with 15 there. The Seniors are planning a breakfast towards the end of September, as a fund raiser. Other fund raiser ideas are needed and also ideas of what kind of things for socializing can be held at the Senior Center. Playing cards and bingo were mentioned as fun events, day or evening, in the Center. Even if you are not a Senior and you have some ideas, please let Joy Lies or Linda Haynes know. It is a beautiful center and it should be filled with fun events for all ages.

Have you looked over your photos for Tamra Huesers to put on the Max website? There are more requests to purchase certain items (on the web site's Swap Shop) so check it out. A used pressure cooker, a play house, and a used metal child's wagon are wanted.

Included with the news this week is a picture of the addition to the Schmidt Museum on Main Street. This addition allows for more room in the museum. Also pictured is the new Max Farm Services building on Main Street. The trailer court has about a dozen or so motor homes and campers in it presently. It is nice to see Max so active.

August 27, 2009

There isn't much in news this week but there is a request. Tamra Huesers, our website 'gal' is looking for local photos of summer, harvest, or back-to-school to post on the Max website. You can e-mail them to tamraj@rtc.coop. If there are any minors on the photos, she does need permission from the parents to post them. If the photos are sent in by the parents, she will take that as an assumption of consent. If grandparents or others send photos, she will have to contact the parents in order to OK posting them. Help her spice up the website.

You really should check the Max website often as there is always a surprise! Just now I came upon many pictures of the young and not-yet-old Max citizens assembling the new Centennial Park playground set for the children. What a nice addition to that park on Main Street.

Tomorrow, Friday, August 28th is the Senior Citizens potluck at 6 p.m. with the meeting to follow at approximately 7 p.m. You have seen the 'Over 55' people around town alot lately with us serving the Hayne's auction, the Tea Party, and most recently the rummage sale. You won't get bored so come hear what is next on the 'oldsters' agenda.

You will notice the elevator piling grain on the ground again this year. If the 'Big White Combine' (hail) doesn't destroy the crops, you will see many more piles go up.

Reminder: Please check your photos as you most likely have one or more that Tamra can use on Max's website.
